Signing Day Eve

It is Signing Day Eve across America.  A day before we learn our official class of 2013.  If there is one constant reminder that you are getting older, it has to be the birthdates on these incoming athletes.  This year we’ll see kids signing LOI from….1995!  Well give or take, but still!  I was in college when these kids were born. The worst part is, this is only going to get worse.  Before I know it we’ll be signing kids that weren’t even born on 9-11.

Anyway, before I finish my Activia and Grape Nuts, the buzz around this Maryland Class has been somewhat quite.  Then again, how much buzz can you generate for a sports story when the Raven’s are taking up every page in the Sports section.  So I don’t blame anyone for not getting exciting about a potential football class while one of the home teams is winning the Super Bowl.

Though things could change, or WILL change I should say, as of now this Maryland Class is ranked 50th per Scout.com.  They are 9th in the ACC, and though that seems depressing, keep in mind there are now 14 schools in the ACC, meaning we are closer to the middle of the pack, than the back.

The big name tomorrow will be Derwin Gray.  He is from Washington DC and represents the jewel of the incoming class.  He had offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, UNC, NC State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, WVU.  So yeah, he was wanted by a lot, and we got him.  Nationally he is the #7 ranked OT in America.  I’m sure for the 9 different QB’s who take a snap for Maryland next season, they will be glad to know he is on board.

Another name you’ll hear is Shane Cockerille, if only because he is a QB and if last year is any indication, he’ll probably have to play at some point in 2013.  Well hopefully not, but I’ll be saying a silent prayer every time a Maryland QB has to run or take a hit this fall.  He is from Baltimore and is a 3 Star prospect according to Scout.com.  He is the 45th ranked QB in the nation and also had an offer from Michigan.

There are actually a lot of guys signing tomorrow (knock on wood) who we could discuss right now, but in the meantime, I wanted to get something out, in the event I find myself too busy later in the week.  Hopefully tomorrow goes smoothly and the Terps can continue to build their way back to the post season (2 wins in 2011, 4 in 2012….6 in 2013??).

Oh and for those of you who put too much stock in Recruiting Day, just keep in mind Russell Wilson was a 2 Star recruit.  So a lot of this analysis you have to take with a grain of salt.  As much as I get into the hoopla of recruiting day, it means nothing until Fall, and the list of busts is as lengthy as the lists of surprises, regardless though it is always fun to have an excuse to talk about college football.
