Terps > Maryland and A Few Thoughts From the Cheap Seats

I’m not a regular blogger on here but I have some things that I need to get off my chest. They guys said it would be ok. But first, let’s recap.

The past 10 days have been a roller coaster for us Terp fans. ( Terps > Maryland and that terrible new font) The basketball team got off to a great start having won 13.5 games in a row leading up to the second half of the Florida State game. Then the wheels fell off. The Terps stopped making baskets, turned the ball over, and didn’t rebound. The last minute of that game saw a furious comeback and Maryland almost pulled off a win. Unfortunately that loss sucked the life out of our Terps and us fans. Coach Turgeon seemed dazed and confused with little answers to what went wrong. The players seemed shocked themselves. It was as if the team thought they were going to coast to another easy win. Well, that doesn’t happen in conference play. You have got to earn every win no matter who you play.

The Terps traveled to Miami on Sunday night to play the ‘Canes in a place where Maryland has never won. Maryland has not beaten Miami at home since they joined the conference. I was a bit uneasy about the game considering Miami had veterans in their starting 5 and they were also a tough and long team, very similar to FSU. I did think that the Terps would play them tough but to be honest I wasn’t expecting a win. What I saw was one of the worst games ever played. Both teams were out of sorts shooting below 30%. 33 points were scored in the first half by both teams. The game was ugly but winnable for the Terps. The second half got a little better but the Terps just couldn’t get anything going offensively. They looked like a shell of their former selves. (Pun intended) Again they stormed back at the end, but didn’t have enough to overcome the ‘Canes.

Now let’s look forward. Yes, I’m concerned about the path the Terps are on but I’m not ready to panic. It’s obvious that many of you are. What I want to say is CALM DOWN! Two weeks ago folks were talking about a top 25 ranking. Now those same people are swearing we won’t even make the NIT. Can you be any more bipolar? I have also read several message board fan comments stating that Turgeon should be fired. Are you kidding me? One person wanted to know what it would take to buy out Turgeon and bring back Gary. This is probably the same fool who wanted Gary to be fired during his last 8 seasons. This guy probably wanted Friedgen canned and Franklin sent on his way too. Now how is that working out?

Seriously folks, the ACC season is still young. This team is very young. They will have many more ups and downs. However, it’s not time to panic. Turgeon has good players and this is still a work in progress. We were way too optimistic after the VT game and now it’s come back to haunt us. The guys need all of our support right now. So, if you are going to the game on Wednesday, please be loud and positive. When all is said and done at the end of the year, you can scream that you want so and so fired or you want this guy to transfer but don’t do it now. It’s counterproductive. A non-Terp fan said something to me the other day that is very true. He is a Maryland native and he said that state of Maryland and D.C. has the most fickle fans in the nation. When the Ravens are losing, Joe Flacco sucks. When he takes them 70 yards in less than a minute, he is the greatest. When the Orioles lose nobody shows up to the park. When they win, everyone claims to be an O’s fan. Come on people. Please stop jumping on and off the bandwagon. It’s embarrassing for everyone involved.

One last thing. Peshon, you scoffed when Chris pegged you for 6 points and 6 assists per game last year. I think it’s time you lived up to your prediction. Now get out there and play like the veteran guard that you are!
