A Maryland Thanksgiving
As per tradition, here is my Maryland Thanksgiving Post. Oh crap, my University of Maryland developed grammar check just said I can’t put “Maryland” and “Tradition” in the same sentence, it does however recommend “Maryland” and “Money”. I’ll just hit ignore and move on.
As we reach another Thanksgiving below are some of things I’m thankful for as a Maryland fan, forgive me if this year my list is a little more cynical than in years past:
-That all the Testudo Statues haven’t yet been melted down and sold
-That the head of our University thinks “Leadership” is taking the quick cash, instead of working to solve a problem
-That the move to the Big 10 was done in an open, and transparent matter where all stakeholders had a chance to make a statement
-That the announcement to join the Big 10 was made AFTER the last home football game thus disallowing any chance for the fans to make any sort of demonstration
-That with the passing of another Football season, I no longer have to try to convince every reader of this blog how the Football team is indeed moving in the right direction and the Randy Edsall hire may not yet be a total disaster
-That I no longer have to do weather forecasts for out of town games, because let’s face it, no one is going to be traveling anymore
-Sub point, the record low in Lansing Michigan for November 21 is -4F!! MINUS 4 F’ING DEGREE’S…in NOVEMBER!!
-That the decision to leave the ACC was made by someone who admitted he wasn’t all that into sports, and never lived in Maryland until he took this job
-That luckily the ones who made this decision are old and will hopefully retire soon, though the damage has been completed
-That I can now watch Maryland woman’s volleyball on the Big 10 Network
-That our tailgating spot has yet to be plowed under for a new Multi-Cultural International Exchange Center
-That our Athletic Department will no longer need my money
-That we’ll have 18 more months of hearing from our fellow ACC Schools what they think of our backstabbing money grab
-That Maryland still celebrates Thanksgiving and haven’t sold that tradition as well
-That we now have lost the Virginia Tidewater and Carolina’s as a recruiting base, and replaced it with…nothing
-That we are now on the winning side of the Big 10-ACC Challenge
-That our Lacrosse program has just been cut off at the knees
But other than that, I think I’m handling the news pretty well.

I can not believe the crybaby whiney butt Maryland fans. You thought you had problems winning in the ACC-hah. Maryland would not even win in the MAC. The Big Ten should have extended a welcoming hand to deserving successful programs like Toledo, BGSU, Kent St. or any other MAC team for that matter before taking on a losing debt machine like Maryland. At first I thought we would be cool like Nebraska when they came into the Big 10 last year. They were ecstatic. They left their rivalries and their conference(which is two tiers above the ACC) because they were not given the respect and the love. The Big 10 is wanting to give Maryland the love it deserves and instead is met with fan resistance and resentment. Keep crying and we will keep winning. So much for Maryland gaining me as a fan which I was ready to embrace and travel and spend my money on your program but not now. I am going to sit back a hope that you get stomped by every Big Ten team for the next 5 decades or until you go crying back to your ACC and its rivalries.

This is between our out of touch administration and the fan base. This has nothing to do with the Big 10, if it were any other conference there would be the exact same backlash!
The point is we have nothing in common with the Midwest, for better or worse that is just the way it is. We want our ACC Basketball, we want Duke/Carolina, we want our road trips to VT, our traditions, it has nothing to do with you, your school, or conference.
If the ACC was falling apart and we needed a safe place to land, not one person would bitch about any of this. I think you are missing the point. I’ll say it over and over again, we had no say in this knee jerk reaction and the more people I talk to at Thanksgiving and what not, every is saying the same thing. They hate it.
I mean come on, if a University President from Colorado came into OSU and said, he guess what, you can kiss the OSU-Michigan rivalary good bye, how would you feel? It’s what we grew up with, it’s all we’ve known. It sucks.
But it is nothing against the Big 10, it’s a Maryland issue.

I can see where our new Buckeye frenemy lost points on the SAT: Analogies. Of course Nebraska was psyched to leave the Big 12, they were felt they were getting hosed by Texas and OU, so the fan base was thrilled to leave the conference and leave it in a weaker state. Plus it made sense geographically. Not sure what the Big10 gained from that txn, but all sides were happy. If Big10 fans can’t appreciate why UMD fans and alumni aren’t falling all over ourselves in euphoria over how this all went down, they are clueless. Yes, we are fortunate to be in a more stable environment for the next round of eventual conference musical chairs. But as has been outlined here and elsewhere, we are unfortunately most likely responsible for the next round of conference looting, and the process was anything but democratic. No doubt this is a virtue lost on those who perceive their conference to be the king of conferences.

How cold do you think N. Y. is in the winter? Do you think the Big Ten will just pack it bags and go home if Maryland backs out, don’t kid your self they will go after another ACC team, there are rumors that FSU have put feelers out about the Big Ten. You can go back to the Big East South because that’s what it is becoming. Oh on other point what sport teams are you willing to cut if you don’t join the Big Ten?
