Awards and Homecoming Game Time

It’s a great day to be a Terp.  The Football team is 3-2 and looking at a huge Saturday match up in UVA, which if they can pull out, will put us 4-2 on Homecoming Day.  Hard to imagine us on the happy side of .500 after 2011.  But perhaps the best news of all, the news that makes that Orioles loss last night sting a little less, HOMECOMING KICKOFF IS FOR 3:30!!

This is huge to us as this years homecoming should be a rather large tailgate.  To have a noon start would of been the equivalent of having Christmas, but only for 3 hours, and your only allowed to receive socks.  Yeah, its still Christmas, but….

Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing a large crowd on the 20th there to support our Terps as they do battle with NC State (who just pretty much knocked the ACC out of relevancy for the year by beating FSU….I mean come on guys, use your head!).

On to the awards.  I was happy to say that I was there in person when Stefon Diggs singlehandily decided to beat Wake Forest by refusing to be tackled.  It was beautiful, and it wasn’t without notice.  For the second time this year Diggs was named ACC rookie of the week.  Did we catch a huge break by landing this kid?  Why even just asking that hypothetical questoin to the computer screen seems silly, he is special.

Demetrius Hartsfield also picked up some notice winning Linebacker of the week.  Hartsfield had 10 tackles, a sack, and a pass break up.  Hartsfield also had his sack to seal the game.

For Maryland, and those scoring at home, this is the third time a Terp has won rookie of the week (Hills being the one to take it between Diggs two awards).  Bright news for the Terps sure, but no need to think of the future when you speak of Diggs, he is doing it now.

Next up of course is UVA.  I would say how big this one is, but I need to save some material for the rest of the week.  So congratualations to Diggs, and Hartsfield and of course all the other Terps who are now 3-2.  Not much to brag about, but it’s early October and we’ve already surpassed some “experts” forecast for our win total.  So keep it up, and Go Terps!

I am kind of surprised we keep getting these 3:30 kicks, but I guess the fact that ESPNU has a 3:30 time slot, I shouldn’t be too surprised. It’s not like a few years ago where the only way you were getting a 3:30 start was to be on ABC regional.

A couple of quick comments from the game. Without Diggs, Maryland does not win that game. We needed an explosive play to break through the stagnant portion of the game, and he provided it.

Next, I am really starting to wonder what Edsall is paying attention to on the sideline. If it’s the game, I am really worried. I feel like his game management in late game situations is worse than what a player in pee-wee football would do. Whether it is timeout useage (or the lack there of), or adding 6 to a score, and then subtracting it from the opposing teams score to determine the advantage of going for 1 or 2. It just seems like every game, something happens that I just don’t get.

Look, I have never coached a game in my life, so I have no idea what it’s like when there are 80 guys on a sideline and people are talking in your ear all day, but there are just some common sense things that should be done and are not.

Still, the Terps have a very real chance of going to 4-2. It will be interesting to see what the mood of UVA is coming off a loss to Duke.

In Edsall’s glory days he won 8 games. Remember, that’s what our administration defines as ‘great.’ So I’m thrilled we’re already talking about possibly winning 5. Woo hoo!

Didn’t the previous coach win 10 a couple of times? Somehow that was only “good”. It is “Wacky Wednesday” everyday in College Park.
