What’s in a Name?

The Maryland Terrapins once again will have names on the back of their uniforms.  Does this mean much in terms of how we do on the field….well no, but to me it is a step in the right direction.  Maryland was the first school to put names on Jerseys so having a name on the back of the uniform is as much a tradition to us, as it is to Penn State not having a name on theirs.

This was also one of my issues when I wrote, what seems like a long time ago, on how to fix Maryland Football.  Yes it was the smallest, and easiest of the fixes, but I think we are finally starting to see a Randy Edsall who can put his hat in his hand and take a step back.  This is a great sign for everyone.

There is a lot of symbolism in those names, for Edsall to keep them off another year, is basically saying “I’m the boss and we are going to keep charging headlong towards this vision of Maryland Football that I have”.  So to reverse course shows that maybe, just maybe he is easing up a little bit.

Then again, maybe I’m reading entirely too much into all of this.  But hey, isn’t that was pre-season is for?  Finding any ounce of hope and clinging to it as if it were the last life preserver on a doomed vessel?

So to me this represents a step in the right direction, which is huge.  You can’t forget that our Athletic Department is too poor to fire anyone, and Kevin Anderson CAN’T fire Edsall without following him out of town, so to think things may just be coming together is good news.

We can’t undo the 2-10 record from last season, but we can erase some of the bad blood that was generated between the new regime and the old, and I think this is a step in the right direction.  Besides I didn’t feel those Maryland Pride Jersey’s were quite “busy” enough with just the flag on there!
