Edsall “It Wasn’t Going to Get Changed Overnight”

As bad as the play was on the field yesterday, and it was bad, really bad, I am more upset with a comment Randy Edsall made after theg game.

“It was an experience, all right,” he said. “One that I’m not happy with. Nobody said this was going to be easy. There are lessons to be learned. … This is a process. It wasn’t going to get changed overnight, but I’ll tell you what. Games like this make you more determined to get it done.”

Um, we were coming off a 9-4 season with a a core group of players returning that should have been ready to build on that this season.  However, we are now sitting at 1-2, with perhaps the most embarrassing loss a Terps football team has had since that 70-7 beat down at Penn State.  I know this Temple team is not the Temple of old.  They are a program on the rise and they deserved to win that game.  In fact I was totally expecting this to be a game, it just wasn’t.  I could live with a loss, but not one where you were totally out played in every single asset of the game.  I was actually going to say we punted pretty well, but oh yeah, we had a punt blocked early that broke some ridiculous streak of games without giving up a block.  We were out played, they were tougher, and they had a better game plan on both sides of the ball.

Again, I can live with losing, just not like that.  I honestly wasn’t all that upset with the loss until I saw that comment “it wasn’t going to get changed overnight”.  Does he not realize this current team didn’t need to be rebuilt?  There was hope for this season.  Sure we weren’t going to win a National Championship, but finishing in the top 3 or 4 in the ACC was a realistic goal.  What Edsall needed to do was rebuild the program, not this team.  This is not like his job at UConn where he took a 1-AA team to the 1A level.  He needed to win games to get the fans fired up, and it was set up for him to do just that early.

The killer is the buzz Maryland created with the uniforms in week 1, is now going to become a punch line to a joke.  Well, there is some good news if you are one of those half full type of people.  There are still some games to prove that it was just a bad day.  If you are a half empty guy, you know those games could lead to even more embarrassing losses at the hands of Georgia Tech, Clemson, and Florida State.  Yikes.

I am not ready to throw in the towel on the season or Edsall yet. However, I felt like he and the staff he put together were totally overmatched today, and that statement just rubs me the wrong way.  I just hope it was a bad week for everyone.  He has done some good things around the program, and is trying to sell it.  However, all that is small potatoes when it comes to winning and losing, and right now we are losing.

A feel like a Friedgen team would have had more fight in them. He’s gone and he’s not coming back, so we have to deal with the current coach. I wasn’t happy when he was fired but he has been growing on me. This is just one game and I have to make up my mind on him. We can still have a really good season. That said, I hate the defense and the defensive coordinator. Now maybe he doesn’t have the right guys for his scheme but they sure are wasting their time with Kenny Tate. Why is our run stopping so bad when we KNEW what they were going to do? Next, DOB has got to calm down. He seems too affraid to turn the ball over now and it’s affecting his reads and throws. Lastly, with three personal protectors, how do you get a damn punt blocked. It’s been 11 years since we had a punt blocked. This is the last I will ever mention about this terrible game. We were out played and out coached. Edsall, just suck it up and put Tyler and McCree back in there. You don’t have to be a hard ass all the time.

    1. Temple’s not THAT good . . . and PSU fans are going to laugh like crazy at Maryland. Temple didn’t roll Penn State into a ball and kick them out of Happy Valley.

    2. Maybe UnderArmour should get a different team to be its billboard.

    3. Anderson & Edsall should be fired today. They won’t be, it’ll take a couple of years and millions of taxpayer dollars to buy them into soft landings they don’t deserve and no one should pay for, but neither of them was ever qualified for this job. Someone should just walk up and punch Edsall in the face the next time he bad mouths Fridge. It’s bad form regardless, and he’s making Fridge look smarter every week right before the post-game presser.

    4. So it was all about filling the stadium?? So it was more empty seats they wanted to put there?? Can we hire Leach now???

It will be a long time before Edsall is gone. His contract will buy him at least 4 years. As far as filling the stadium, Anderson totally dropped the ball on that one. Edsall may get it done later, but Leach would have done it this year. I am not giving up hope yet, but I don’t like much of what I saw and heard yesterday.

Edsall should just say we all stunk and we will be back fighting next week. Don’t put all the blame on the players even if they did stink. The coaches have got to get them ready to play. I told everyone who wanted Friedgen fired that things could be worse. Leach was never going to be our coach so that dream can stop. Friedgen loved his players and the University and he did everything he could to win.

It did change overnight, last year we would’ve won that game this year we got smoked.

I don’t know if we would have won it with Fridge, I can think of some good games where we laid eggs with him. I don’t know, I just don’t get why he thinks he needs to reinvent the wheel with the team based on what is here. The program yes, team no.
