Terps Picked 5th in Atlantic Division…Again??

Is it me or are we always picked 5th in the Atlantic Division to start out the ACC Season. It is like that every year until Clemson losses an inexplicable game, until FSU folds under the pressure until NC State, uh NC State’s itself into underperforming, so does this ranking discourage me? No not in the least.

This is going to be a tough year for the Terps, but not in the sense that the 2011-2012 basketball season is going to be tough, in a sense that Maryland is going to have to fight for their lives every Saturday afternoon. But what makes me optimistic is that I see many of these games as winnable. When it is all said and done, Maryland will be bowl eligible and the final Atlantic Division standing will look nothing like they do now, that’s just sports. Whatever is picked to happen by the masses, just never seems to come to fruition.

But I do think Maryland is being discounted here. All right…all right, show me a fan who doesn’t think his team is being under rated a full 6 weeks before the season kicks off, I get that, but I am excited about this team. I think our potential is wide open, and we will surprise some people.

Granted we could come in 5th, but this is the most excited I’ve been entering a season in a long time, and that excitement isn’t coming from my hope that we can hold on to the 5th spot in the division. Luckily for us the Conference is not won on ACC Media Day, and football is just around the corner. Heck going into August I’d rather this team be picked for 5th than 1st. They need that fire in the belly.

Here’s to hoping Randy Edsall can light that pilot switch.

Oh and I guess I should post the rest of the picks:

Atlantic:  FSU, Clemson, NC State, Boston College, Maryland Wake Forest

Coastal: VT, Miami, UNC, Georgia Tech, UVA, Duke

Not a big deal. Seems like this is an every year occurrence. I still worry about the loss of Don Brown though.

Doesn’t bother me. I put us at 6-6 plus or minus 1. I think the defense will be a work in progress. The offense should be fine. What really worries me is who is going to kick and punt this year? Special teams will also suffer with the loss of Torrie Smith.
