More Thoughts on the Gary-Yow Fued

Maybe it’s just me, but does it seem like this University has been snake bitten ever since Ralph Friedgen walked out of RFK with the Military Bowl Trophy in hand?  Could this be some kind of new curse?  I’m guessing probably not, the outlook of the Football team is too good for a University wide curse, plus our Olympic Sports Programs are just too good for us to suffer any sort of long term drought as a school.  But every time I go to write a post, it seems to be more bad to write about then good.

The latest saga has to do with the feud between Gary Williams and Debbie Yow.  A lot of us, though not the biggest fans of Yow, longed for her reign as Kevin Anderson seem intent on undoing everything that the Football team did in the previous 10 years.  And though that was just a hypothetical pipe dream, we can now really see the vile bubbling out between Williams and Yow.  Before it was like a volcano.  A little rumbling here, a little rumor there.  Is it going to blow, or was that just some minor earthquake.  Now you can see the lava spewing from the top of the mountain.  The debate is over, these two despise one another.

So where does that leave us?  I mean this is a classic he said, she said.  And as Maryland fans it is quite easy to pick which side we are going to believe.  Gary said he didn’t sabotage the NC State head coach search, and I believe him.  I mean why would he care what another ACC school is doing, when we are up to our eyes in round ball problems?

But for as much as I want to believe it, there is a side of me that knows how competitive Gary is, and how much he butted heads with Yow, that perhaps over a beer, I could see him advising a coach to steer clear.  Probably in a harmless way.  I don’t know.  I’m hoping this all blows over, and I guess by mentioning it here, it only makes me a hypocrite, but just when you think there is no Maryland news to discuss, something like this rears it’s head.

I guess what is lost in this is poor Mark Gottfried.  Can you imagine being him.  I kind of picture it like being on your honeymoon with your new wife, and all she can talk about is her Ex-Husband sabatoging her relationship with her most recent boyfriend.  Can you picture the hell?  Afterall, what did he do?

Anyway, the Terps next trip into Raliegh to face the Wolfpack should be a good one.  As the saying goes “Hell knows no fury like a woman scorned.”

I wouldn’t put this past Gary at all. Of course, I have know concrete knowledge one way or the other. All I know is that I wouldn’t see him doing this to sabotage NC State but rather to just be an ass to Debbie Yow. I’m not the biggest Debbie Yow fan in the world but Gary is a big enough jackass to pull something like this.

I think Yow sees Gary in her nightmares. I’d be surprised if Gary went out of his way to contact potential NCSU hires, but if Shaka dropped him a line to ask him what it’s like to work under Yow, I definitely don’t fault Williams for speaking his mind. And Williams and Freigen weren’t the only coaches who’ve had trouble with Yow in the past. The bottom line is Debbie promised Wolfpack nation a huge hire, ended up with an ok hire about whom she seemed embarrassed, and then totally lost her cool during a question that wasn’t even directed at her. I’m sure Gottfried will be an improvement over Lowe, but he sure has his work cut out for him.

I think Gary did say something but only after being contacted by the candidates, which is obviously a smart thing to do when deciding to take a job. And there is nothing wrong with it assuming that is what Williams did.

Yow comes off as insecure and always has. These problems have followed her wherever she goes, yet they never change and are never her fault. The letter she issued to fans was a joke and then she put down Gottfried when she explained the search. It’s par for the course for her, making herself the center of attention.

Debbie Yow made an ass of herself. She could have brushed off the question. Instead she embarrassed herself, her new coach, and the university. I’m sure Gary would give his opinion if someone called him. I don’t think he went out of his way to “sabatoge” anyone’s coaching search.
