Terps Get Much Needed Road Win in Boston

You ever see one of the Happy Day’s episodes where The Fonz has to apologize, only he doesn’t  know how to say the word “Sorry” because he has never used it before?  That’s how I feel about writing “Ro…ro…roa….Road Win”.  But Happy Days are indeed here, as Maryland is now 5-2 and looking to become Bowl Eligible against Wake Forest next week.  Though that game is yet to be played, how big would it be to become bowl eligible prior to Halloween (to answer your question…very!).

Oh of course there was the matter of the Terps not seizing the game when they had their chances, and we almost witnessed one of the worst collapses in our recent football history, but that didn’t occur so I’m not going to waste anytime on that.  What did occur was a well played, aggressively coached Road Win that officially separates this team from last years.  Though BC didn’t play their best, the Terps showed a lot of guts in this one.  Twice they went for it on 4th down on a drive that ultimately led to a touchdown (note we won by less than 7!).  Antwine Perez played his best game as a Terp with two big time interceptions.  Danny O’Brien, though not spectacular, was certainly efficient enough to go 27/40 for 182 yards and throw for 3 TD’s, and just as importantly 0 interceptions.  He was our whole offense as BC did what they thought they would and completely shut down our running game.  A great day for the Freshmen.

If you drew up keys for victory for the Terps today you would have said protect the ball and avoid penalties.  It’s no secret those are the ingredients to winning away from home.  The Terps took care of the ball, and for the most part kept the penalties to a minimum giving up about half as many yards as they did in Death Valley.  And because they were able to do that, the fans in Boston got treated to the fight song.  Though it has been a while for me, there is no sweeter sound than hearing the fight song on someone elses field after a great win.  Chris was lucky enough to witness it and forward me a picture to post.  I on the other had, not only wasn’t there in person, but couldn’t watch online.  So instead I sat next to my radio half expecting to hear someone break in that Japan has attacked Pearl Harbor.   Though I shouldn’t complain, I’d read a stock ticker describing each play if it would give us a win.

So say what you want about our Terps, they are not perfect, but in two absolutely must win games this year, Navy and now @ BC, they rose to the occasion.  Barring a collapse of epic proportions, this will be enough to get us into the post season.  Again, a modest accomplishment, but after 2-10, it feels like a Conference Championship…speaking of which, why not shoot for that next!

Huge win, though it would have been nice if we didn’t need to hang on for dear life at the end. Now take care of Wake at home and we will be bowling. I don’t get it.

I’m on the Danny O express and would be totally fine if I don’t see Jamar take another snap. I get making other teams have to prepare for the dual threat but after the last few games, I don’t think any team is spending much time preparing for the J Robinson full back dive. I know Fridge’s loyalty is going to keep JRob in the rotation but maybe line him up at receiver or something. I don’t want to see him under center anymore exept when the game is out of reach and we’re resting/protecting Danny.

In case anyone else was wondering…O’Brien ranks fifth nationally among FBS freshmen in passing efficiency (127.9). I think the 3 INT’s at Clemson actually help because if he were the #1 or #2 freshman in the country, he might feel some unnecessary pressure or like he has to live up to some unrealistic expectations.

Yes, O’Brien is well on his way to being a special player at Maryland. I have complete faith in him. There is no longer a QB controversy at least until we lose two in a row and I go into a panic and need something to write about!
