4 MD baseball players selected in first 5 rounds
4 Maryland baseball recruits have been selected in the first two days of the MLB First Year Player Draft. Their prize shorstop, Cito Culver, from NY was selected by the Yankees at the end of the first round. 3 other players including, Patrick Leyland, the son of Tigers Manager, Jim Leyland, have been selected within the first 5 rounds. The rumors are that all will go pro. MD also has commitments from the top two players in the state who have yet to be picked but might be in the later rounds. Check out the story at Testudo Times.

Well even if they never play here, it is nice to know that Bakich is getting into the doors of the top recruits. Now he needs to find some that will play.

I used to honestly believe that we could not compete in the ACC because of our disadvantage in geography. But seeing UVA thrive totally throws that theory out the door. Maryland has a proud tradition of baseball excellence, Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Al Kaline, Harold Baines, Cal Ripken, plus many more. There is no excuse for us not competing. I think they are headed in the right direction, but I just worry Bakich will be gone before they truly mature as a program.
