Notes From First Spring Football Scrimmage
The news trickling out of spring football has not been very exciting this year. That is both good and bad. The good news is there haven’t been a ton of injuries, the bad news is, there just hasn’t been too much news worthy. Last night however, was the first scrimmage of the spring, and there is finally some stuff worth reporting, some good, and some concerning.
First, the one position I was not concerned about coming into spring was place kicker, but this stat opened my eyes a bit. Nick Ferrera 0-4, two FG blocked, one wide left, and one 27 yard PAT blocked. Uh, here’s to hoping it was just one of those nights, and this is not the start of a sophomore jinx. I mean technically he is still a freshman, so it just had to be one of those nights right?
Offensively, the bright spot was the running game. Da’Rel Scott and Davin Meggett both had rushing touchdowns, and finished with 42 and 13 yards respectively. Scott’s TD was a 42 yard run, so it is nice to see he still has the big play capabilities. Caleb Porzel had 9 carries for 71 yards, including a 33 yard run. DJ Adams had 10 carries for 50 yards including a 15, and two 12 yard runs. Here is the big spring question. Are our backs and O line improving, or is the D line a liability? Stay tuned.
At QB Jamar Robinson was 15-22 for 148 yards and led the offense to two of the three scoring drives. Danny O’Brien was 12 of 19 for 115 yards and 1 TD pass to TE Ryan Sclothauer in the goal line scrimmage.
One final note is Friedgen mention there were too many penalties. The good news is there were no injuries to report, and there are still two more weeks of practice before the Red-White game on April 24th.
