Green With Envy

Well our greatest nightmare could very well be on the verge of coming true.  This tournament has definitely been one for the ages.  There have been some unbelievable games and epic upsets.  But for us Terps fans I think 2010 is going to be remembered for what could have been.  I won’t rehash the Michigan State shot, but over and over again I picture what the world would have been like had it rattled out.

I know the world isn’t nearly as simple as this scenario makes it out to be, but had that MSU shot missed (as it probably should have 7 times out of 10), we would have played Northern Iowa.  Now NIU had a great season and didn’t just roll over for the Spartan’s, but how well do you think the Terps would have fared against a team that can’t handle the full court press?  They were the paper to our scissors.  The lasanga to our Garfield.  The…well you get the idea.

Then we would have played Tennessee to get to the Final Four.  I don’t know too much about UT but considering that MSU beat them with as many injuries as they had, I don’t find it unreasonable to think we would have beaten them as well.  Then we would have played a 5 seed to go to the National Championship.  Of course there is where MSU’s season was derailed.  So following my logic so would have ours.  But the road to the Final Four, had that shot not fallen, would have been pretty smooth.

And then we could have been in position to possibly face Duke for the National Championship.  Oh how epic would that have been?  Of course history is not made by “what if’s” and hypoethticals, so the last 10 minutes of typing pretty much has been an exercise in futility, but allowing your mind to wander like is only natural.

Of course the MSU shot did fall.  Greivis’s Career was snuffed out 6.1 seconds after his greatest shot and now we are living in a world where the only thing between Duke and a National Championship is a #5 seed.  And when you are facing this kind of reality, I guess it’s only natural to think of what might have been.

Good Luck to the Butler Bulldogs tomorrow.  You all represent perhaps one of the greatest David vs. Goliath stories in sports history.  And I can promise you that anyone who is reading turtledroppings.com will be pulling for you tomorrow.  Maybe Butlers dream season can help take the sting out of our nightmare!
