Driesell To Accept A Head Coaching Job
Just when I was starting to think the Maryland Basketball coaching staff was starting to get some continuity going again, likely the top recruiter on the staff, Chuck Driesell is off to the Citadel for a head coaching gig. Obviously, you hate to loose assistant coaches, but at the same time it is nice to see them move on to bigger and better things (though it may be debated if it really is a step up).
I just want to play devils advocate here. I think our program deserves a top notch coach when Gary Williams retires, but I could see the current administration saying we want to keep it in the “family” and by having Chuck go out and get a head coaching job, that is one way they can do just that, and likely for A LOT less money than a big name. I don’t know if that is the case at all, and I am only throwing it out there to see what anyone else thinks.
In the immediate future, it does somewhat hurt the local recruiting, not that it has been great, but Driesell did have some excellent contacts in the Northern Virginia area. Who replaces him? I have no idea, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Joe Harrington back as an actual coach, if nothing materializes.
One last idea, Juan Dixon anyone. If he and Booth couldn’t recruit Baltimore, no one ever will be able to! However, I don’t know if Juan is ready to give up on his playing days, this may be the opportunity to help persuade him it is time to come home!

I see some merit to your theory. I think when Gary does leave they are going to have someone with Terp ties come in to replace him. Chuck Driesell could be that person, but he would need to have some head coaching experience which is what he is going to be doing now.

They might also bring Lonegrin (sp) back. I think they should hire Walt Williams as an assistant. He could probably recruit the district and Booth can recruit Baltimore. Maybe Gary will hire an AAU guy as his next assistant……ha ha ha!
