Getting Ready for Duke
Well, for those of you who are wondering, we were spared of the massive snow up in here in New England. I work about half an hour north of Boston, and we got nothing more than a dusting, and when I got home to Boston, we had about an inch and a half. So, enough about weather, now that Duke has dispatched of North Carolina, it is time to start focusing on Saturday’s Maryland Duke game.
A little history for you. When we lived in Annapolis, most of our friends would come over to watch games from time to time and there was actually snow on the ground for on Maryland Duke game. In fact it was likely January 18th 2003 if my sense of time adds up. Duke was #1 and under the influence of some adult beverages someone said if we win this we are sledding down the “hill” in the front yard with no shirts on. Needless to say we have a similar scenario now. (I also think that is night the Homer Simpson Head Rubicks cube thing got solved) The problem is, as I go around thinking about where all these friends live now, they have plenty of snow, but there yards are flat as a pancake. I propose you get together somewhere, and make a pile of snow to slide down should the game play out the way we would hope!
While I will wait until tomorrow to preview this game, I did come across an interesting breakdown from Patrick Stevens on how the current Terps have fared in Cameron. Very interesting to look at those stats.
I was thinking about it, maybe this would be a good post for everyone to comment on their favorite Maryland Duke moments. The list is really piling up. I am not sure how I would rank them after the 04 ACC Championship game. Joe’s tip in for 40 and the win at Cameron in 95. Joe’s block of Greg Newton in Cole for the win in Cole in 95. The “Oh he steal” game in 02 at Cole. The above mentioned beat down of Duke with the front yard body sledding. Juan Dixon stealing the show on Battier’s Senior night. The list could really go on and on. You know I hate to bring up a loss, but never have I felt more satisfied after a loss as I did when they lost to Duke in the 01 ACC Semi’s. That was a very fun game to watch, with two teams really playing at the top of their game. So, what are some of your memories of the games with the Dukies. There are also some pretty painful memories of losses that included Ricky Price’s three from the corner at the buzzer in Cole 96 I believe, the gone in 50 seconds game, and then the National Semifinal loss. No wonder I love to beat these guys. So what do you think?

The gone in 60 seconds game is obviously the most painful but the best are the ACC Tournament (little boy crying) game and the day my wife solved the Homer Rubicks Cube. Over the years I can’t really remember one from another but those stand out.
I have about 4 feet of snow in the backyard. Some of it is drifting snow, some from shoveling off the deck. Anyway, I jumped off the deck today just for fun. If MD beats Duke, maybe there will still be enough snow for me to do that again without breaking my legs.

What pains me so much about the gone in 50 seconds game, is that they played so incredibly well and totally out played them until Blake fouled out. And if I recall correctly, there were a couple really tickie tack calls on him. I like the jumping off the deck thing, but I can see some day trying that after beating them and the snow being gone

I don’t remember what year this was (2000 or 2001?) but we were playing them at Cameron. I had a huge exam the next day so I decided to skip watching the game and study instead. Back then, I could not separate MD athletics from getting totally hammered, so it was all or none when it came to watching games. I chose none and parked it up at McKeldin for the night. We won the game and it didn’t take long for word to spread to the library. I decided to take a break and go have a little celebratory smoke with my study buddy – McKeldin Testudo. While I was out there, gradually, off in the distance, I started to hear some chanting or something. Then, like the ending scene of Lean on Me, I noticed a huge mob of people walking across the mall – down at the bottom near the Admin buildings. I didn’t know what it was at first but I put two and two together. I learned the next day the students took the goal post down to frat row although I don’t remember seeing the goal post myself. Maybe I just caught a wave of it or something. I also don’t remember what I got on that particular exam but I earned that grade.

Was that game in 1995 the same game Joe Smith had 40 points?

He had 40 at Cameron on the tip in. Gary was sick and didn’t coach. He had pneumonia and was in the hospital. Joe was a beast. Check this out.

Nice story Rin. I have to say the Oh He Steal it game. That wasn’t just a play, it was the last time we played them in Cole, and it was the year we won the National Championship. Just a total heads up play against a school who everyone always drools over being heads up. When they ran off into the locker room at halftime, that had to be the loudest Cole has ever been.
