Taking a Closer Look at UVA

We all know how the Terps are doing, and probably don’t want to read a whole lot more about it.  So lets take a look at Maryland’s next opponent, UVA.  Before we get to far into this, I want to make sure everyone saw this.  Did you all watch it?  Is that not the funniest thing you have seen?  Good, ok now back to the task as hand.

The Hoos/Cavs come to College Park at 2-3 and 1-0 in the ACC.  The wins are against North Carolina and Indiana.  In fact they are on a two game winning streak, where the defense has allowed only 10 total points.  The losses were at the hands of Williams and Mary, TCU, and Southern Mississippi.  Not exactly a top ten schedule.

Jameel Sewell is 74 of 135 for 935 yards, 5 TD’s and 5 INTS.  He has also rushed for 117 yards and 4 TD’s on 77 carries.   Mikell Simpson had a big week last week against IU (only 83 yards, but 4 of his 5 TD’s were in that game.  On the season he has 247 yards rushing.  He also has 16 catches for 148 yards.   I did almost forget to mention he was injured in that IU game, and is likely to play, even though he has yet to practice this week.  If he is unable to go look for Rashawn Jackson to get the bulk of the running back carries.

Leading the Cavs in receiving is Kris Burd with 16 catches for 248 yards.  Another emerging WR target is third string QB Vic Hall.  He caught 6 passes for 85 yards and a TD against Indiana, and he has also rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries this season.  Look for him to have a big day.  I would also expect Mikell Simpson to have his usual big day against the Terps.

The UVA offense is averaging 25 points a game, but Al Groh is making his usual midseason push to save his job after a dreadful start.  They are also averaging 325 yards of total offense a game (120 rushing and 204 passing).  Defensively, the Cavs are allowing 295 yards per game (132 rushing and only 163 yards passing).

Like I said, UVA appears to be heading in the right direction after winning in Chapel Hill and last week at home against Indiana.  Keep in mind they were able to shut Maryland out, and it gives you reason to be concerned this week.  Check back later for an update on injuries, and perhaps a weather update.

Also, one last reminder to check us out at the Raycom Sports Maryland Blog.  Bob and I post about one post a week over there in addition to here.  If you leave a comment on anyone’s post, you are entered to win one of 30 tee-shirts they are giving away from the Original Retro Brand ($38 retail).  So get over there and try and get yourselves a tee!
