Maryland Ramblings

After watching the game Saturday, I was fortunate to have to go to a wedding, with an open bar.  What game?  I pretty much moved on when I was yelling for my wife to hurry up because the cab was here.  Anyway, I just want to throw some points out there.

This season is a wash, and while I hate to throw the seniors aside, I would like to see some younger players get a little more playing time.  Since Maryland is so young, a fact Friedgen will announce 9 more times this season in the paper, you might as well get them some playing time so they don’t become old, yet inexperienced.  Mostly I am looking in Jamar Robinson’s direction.  I guess he has been a little injured, but he needs to get some meaningful playing time.  And I don’t mean in the wildcat.  He needs to get a couple back to back drives here and there.  He has to have some live action if we want to take advantage of the skill position players we (should) have back next year.  I don’t want to see us running a watered down playbook with all that talent because the QB doesn’t have the experience or know the system.  I can see the press conferences now.

I will tell you I was kind of surprised when I saw Porzel’s numbers.  I feel like he had a better game than the stats indicated.  I think there is a future for him on this team, and it may even be this year.  If he can field a punt, it might just be on punt returns!!!!

I am not going to go into a rant about the game, but there are two plays that stick out in my mind from the Duke game.  Porzel run up the gut on 3rd and 2, (actually it might have been 4th and 2), I have forgotten already, and the Davin Meggett drop on 3rd down.  First, the play to Porzel was just a bad call.  There is a bruiser in Meggett who should be able to get you the tough yards, not the 140 pound Porzel.    Secondly, if Meggett catches that ball, he may very well, score, and he easily had the first down, and plenty of more yards.  Instead it goes as an incomplete and the rest is history.  Nonetheless, those two plays stand out as ones that kill you.

A couple of final notes, ESPN and Raycom are taking the 6 day option for the ACC schedule for the November 7th NCST game.  And finally, the ACC Media has voted the Lady Terps 5th in the conference this year.  I guess that isn’t bad for a rebuilding year, but with all the resources we put into the women’s Basketball team, they need to be in that top 3 year in and year out.
