Terps Football Dons Pads for First Time
As the summer heat rolls on in College Park, the Terps practiced in full pads for the first time on Friday. Today will be the first two-a-day with a scrimmage set for the afternoon. As the season nears, it appears Ralph Friedgen is going to use this scrimmage to see if there are any players further down the depth chart. that can step in and help unexpectedly.
Here are some notes from Fridays practice:
- Chris Turner continues to impress Friedgen. Ralph has said he has been making all the reads and getting the ball out quickly. Even went so far as to say he is “doing the little things”. You know it is kind of weird hearing Friegen give such praise for Turner during August. Let’s just hope Chris is really going to take the next step and be the consistent QB the Terps desperately need if they hope to contend for the Atlantic division this year.
- Ralph also commented the running game is a little behind the passing game so far. The running backs are doing a better job on picking up the blitz. Ralph is going to focus on improving the offensive lines ability to run block today. They really need to be serviceable to not only protect Turner, but the Terps have a stable of running backs that just need a little room.
- To go along with the three returning running back, D.J. Adams has really be impressing Friedgen according to Patrick Stevens Blog D1scourse. He even says he might be as good or better than the three returnees.
- I know Bob is concerned about this (actually all of us fans should be), the place kicking job is pretty close still. Today’s scrimmage could start to separate the field a little bit. It is good to hear that freshman Nick Ferrara is making up ground with the rest of the group, but this job may not be decided for a while.
Well there are a few notes on how Coach Friedgen sees things so far this summer. The Terps have been pleasing the coach with the effort thus far. If I get any of the scrimmage stats and news before I head out for the evening, I will try to do a quick update tonight. Until then go Terps.
Extra Dropplets
Yesterday my neighbor sent me a text pic of one of the black Terps buses rolling through Harvard Square while he was out for lunch. After a quick scan of the Field Hockey website, the team is up here for a couple of scrimmages with Northeastern and BC, while watching 3 players perform for the US National team.
