Meet the Newbies: Travis Hawkins

I think this is it.  The last in our series of Meet the Newbies.  We have not done David Mackall, but he is off to Prep school with the hopes of joining the Terps in January, or next Fall.  So we will wait on him.  Otherwise this is it.  And to show how random our method of writing these actually was, we are going to be finishing with one of our top recruits, Travis Hawkins.

Travis is one of those guys who makes me think for a second that I could have played D-1 football.  I mean he is 5-10 like me, and 185 like me (we’ll close enough), so maybe if I had applied myself I could have been a highly recruited CB, but then you look at the 40 speed which is 4.42 and you realize that dream was never going to happen.

Travis comes to us from Quince Orchard HS out in Gaithersburg (same school as Zach Kerr).  While at QOHS he did everything short of retrieving the tee after kick offs.  He played Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver, and Cornerback.  For Maryland he was recruited as a CB, though if you read the Sun today there is a nice article about how players often come to Maryland for one position and end up playing a different one, so who knows where he’ll end up.

But for the time being he is a highly recruited CB.  In fact, he was ranked #9 in the Superprep Mid Atlantic 54.  He was ranked the 12th best CB by Rivals, and 196 overall in Rivals top 250.  Turning heads isn’t new for Travis as Friedgen admitted on Signing Day that his recruitment began 3  years ago.  Though we can’t say for sure, that may have very well been the edge we needed since Travis had over 20 scholarship offers, some of which came from WVU, Oregon, and Florida.  So we should all be thankful that there will be a Maryland Jersey with “Hawkins” on the back of it this fall.

Now unfortunately Travis’s bio does not include a birthday, so we can’t finish up on that note, but we can say that we are happy Travis is enrolled at Maryland and we look forward to seeing what he can do for our program.   So welcome to Maryland Travis Hawkins.

With that, we are officially done with this series.  Now we can focus entirely on the 2009 season which looks to be an interesting one.  I just got my College Football Preview edition of SI and it has Maryland NOT going to a bowl game this year.  So just more bulletin board material.  I personally am not worried because SI has had us not going to a bowl game for several years now if my memory serves me correctly.

Extra Droppings:

Just got back from my vacation and am happy to report, there are pumpkins on the vine!  I don’t think the patch has ever looked as healthy as it does this year, so hopefully we can get a bumper crop of carve-able Jack-o-lanterns.  Of course we are a long way from picking time, so things can still go wrong, but for now, so far so good.
