Meet the Newbies: Lorne Goree

Well we are back looking at Linebackers for this edition of “Meet the Newbies”.  Which brings us to Lorne Goree.  Now I don’t know the exact pronunciation of “Goree” but it better sound like gory or else I am going to be pretty disappointed.  I mean what a great name for a linebacker.  Screw skill, give me guys with names like “Crash”, “Vicious”, “Fierce”.  Okay beside Sid Vicious, no one really has those types of names, so when a guy like Lorne Goree comes along you have to take him.  I mean not since Omar Savage have we had such a great football name on the roster!

But there is certainly more reason than that for Lorne to be coming to College Park.  Lorne comes to us via Springdale, MD from C.H. Flowers HS.  Wow, how could such an aptly  named player play at a high school with such a poor football name?  To be honest, and if you know me, you know this kills me, but I have no idea where Springdale, MD is, and I’m pretty sure I know where 95% of all the towns in this state are located.  (By the way, I just looked up Springdale Maryland in my trusty Atlas, and there was no town by that name…hmmm).

Lorne recorded 90 tackles and 3 interceptions his Senior year leading the Jaguars to a 10-2 record.  That was enough for Scout.com to rank him as the 35th best weakside linebacker.  Rivals had him 47th among outside linebackers and Scouts.inc have him at 92 among outside linebackers.  Goree also considered WVU (uhhh why?), Illinois, and Syracuse.

On the personal side, Lorne was born on April 16, 1991 in Washington DC.  Now instead of looking at the Washington Post on that day, which I have been doing here lately, I am going to look at historical events that took place on April 16th.  I have a theory that April is the month with the most historical events, so we will see if that pans out here.  OK, we have in 1777 at the Battle of Bennington the Green Mountain Boys defeated the British..USA!…USA!  Moving up to 1862 we have the abolition of slavery in Washington DC.  In 1912 the Pirates turned a 5-3-7 double play, you don’t see that much.   In 1922 Salisbury, Maryland’s Annie Oakley set a record by breaking 100 clay targets in a row.  Though she later become famous mostly for her stylish sunglass*.  And in 1991 the St. Louis Blues became the 8th team in NHL history to come back from a 3-1 playoff deficit defeating the Detriot Red Wings 3-2 in game 7.

*-May not be entirely true

So welcome to Maryland Lorne Goree, we wish you all the best!

Extra Droppings:

So I finally watched episode 1 of Terrapin Rising.  In the opening sequence Chris Turner says “It’s 30 minutes after the Humanitarian Bowl and we are already thinking of next year….welcome to Terrapin Rising”.  Now maybe I live under a rock, but why do they wait until the summer is half over to annouce the show is coming back when they obviously knew in late December??  From June 1 to mid July, I was starting to worry!
