Meet the Newbies: Isaiah Ross

I’m not going to break any news here by saying that Maryland has a strong history of producing Linebackers.  I know if I were a lineback (HA!), I would consider Maryland.  I think Isaiah Ross agrees with me.  We’ve put plenty of LB’s into the “Lig”.  Eric Barton, Jon Condo, EJ Henderson, David Holloway, D’Qwell Jackson, Leon Joe (aka the dyslexic bloggers worst nightmare), and that Shawn Merriman kid.  All of those players listed are in the NFL as we speak.  So as a LB, choosing Maryland isn’t a bad idea.

Throw in the new ultra aggresive defense we’re supposed to be implementing and you’d be crazy not to give Maryland a hard look as a LB prospect.  But why am I saying all of this.  With Isaiah Ross, I’m preaching to the choir.  Ross comes to Maryland via nearby Eleanor Roosevelt High School (how come you don’t see the name Eleanor much these days?).  He checks in at 6’2″ and 248 LB’s.

Ross, is a pretty big LB, in fact there is talk of him finishing his career at Maryland as a DE, but for now he is going to start his career at the linebacker position.  At ERHS Ross had 80 tackles his senior year.  He also had 12.5 sacks and 2 interceptions.  That was enough to have him named the Prince George’s County Player of the Year.  He was also named to the First Team Washington Post All-Metro….Team (sorry a little Austin Powers moment there).

Nationally he is ranked the 67th best inside linebacker prospect in the nation per Rivals.com.  While Scout in the same ranking has him at 76th.  He drew interest from Illinois, Buffalo, NC State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Syracuse.  His all time favorite Terp is EJ Henderson, which is a great choice by the way.  Isaiah will be pursuing a degree in either Business Management or Sports Communication.  Though no facts were listed to provide back up, allegedly he is a top notch student (unlike myself who just took 5 minutes to figure out how to spell the word “allegedly”).

And finally, Isaiah Ross was born on January 24, 1991 in Washington DC.  So that brings us to “Time to feel Old” which incidentily is turning into this day in the Washington Post Headlines.  On this day, as you can guess, the Persian Gulf War dominated the headlines (Newspapers LOVE wars!).  “Allies Adjust Tactics to Counter Iraqi Shifts”.  That is kind of like the Globtrotters switching from Man to Man to zone because the Washington Generals just scored on back to back possesions.  Also we have, “Powell vows to isolate Iraqi Army and Kill It”, which turned out to be an accurate promise…well as much as the UN would allow it to be at any rate.  And finally “Fear of Terrorism Causing Americans to Travel Less”.  Terrorism?  In 1991?? Believe me, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

So welcome to Maryland Isaish Ross, we wish you a long and successful career.

Extra Droppings:

You know, I can’t hold my tongue on this any longer.  If I hear one more person say that Michael Vick is getting treated worse than Donte Stallworth, even though Stallworth killed a person, while Vick only killed dogs, I’m going to go nuts.  If you think that, you are missing the point.  Had Vick and Stallworth both committed a DUI and Vick killed a dog and Stallworth killed a person, well then yes, that would be a valid argument.  But the point here is the intent of the crimes.  Vick INTENDED to kill dogs, Stallworth never intented to kill, or hurt, anyone.

Don’t get me wrong, what happend with Stallworth is in-excuseable and a terrible tradegy for that victims family.  But that sort of accidient is more forgiveable to Americans because lets face it; it could happen to anyone.  I can see a scenario where I could be in Stallworth’s shoes, stuff  happens, you make poor decisions and you end up making mistakes that change your life and others lives forever.  But I, like most people, could never see myself doing what Vick did.  And that is why the outrage is greater.  It isn’t the end result, it’s the intent that matters to the American public.

I’m sorry, this Extra Droppings section was never intended for anything other than light hearted looks at certain things, but sometimes I just need to get things off my chest.

To your point, I always look at our linebackers after QB’s when our new class is announced. Just seems like our most sucessful players have come from the LB corps, but you have to look at those dreamy qb’s first!
