Meet the Newbies: Avery Murray

Now don’t let the title fool you.  Avery Murray is new to the Football team, but he isn’t new to the campus.  He graduated from high school early so that he could enroll at Maryland in January of 2009.  So he has a whole semester under his belt.  I wonder if that gets him out of all the freshman hazing stuff (assuming, that is, that hazing still exists..wink, wink).

Anyway, Avery comes to Maryland via Florence South Carolina.  Maybe it’s the way I’m picking these names, but it seems as though a lot of these kids are coming from the south.  Avery is a linebacker who checks in at 6’1″ and 220 pounds.  He played at West Florence High School and started 3 years there for the football team.  In 2008 Avery had 102 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 interceptions, all of which was enough to get him named to the All 4A State Team.  However, for good measure Avery also had 386 yards rushing with 12 TD’s.  Not bad for a linebacker.

Scout.com had him listed as the 42nd best weakside linebacker in the country, and Scout Inc had him as the 53rd ranked outside linebacker.  Rivals put him on their post season top 35 for South Carolina.  But Avery isn’t just all about football.  As mentioned above, he graduated early to get to College Park, and while in high school he made the honor roll on 4 different occasions.  He plans to major in Physical Therapy.

Avery Murray was born on September 7, 1990 in Florence.  On that date in Washington Post History “FDIC says Real Estate Slump in Area” oh really!  I guess you could probably recycle that headline.  Of course if you are a historian, you’d have to consider this class the Gulf War generation because every newspaper every day from September 1990 to April 1991, if not longer has a Gulf War story.  Today “Saudis Agree to Pay Billions for Build Up”.  It sounds like a lot, but that is probably 3 hours worth of oil production for them.  There are also stories about troop deployments and so on, but I can only write about Gulf War I so many times before it starts to lose it’s luster.  Didn’t anything else news worthy happen in the early 90′s?

So welcome to Maryland Avery Murray, we hope you keep alive the long tradition of successful linebackers to wear the red and whie, and black….and yellow.  Man do we have a lot of colors.

Extra Droppings:

I haven’t been able to touch on this subject because snake stories trump all other Extra Dropping topics.  But on fathers day I got an Itunes card.  The plan is to download some TV episodes to watch on our cross country flight out to Cal.  Well the day I went to redeem my card was just a few days after Michael Jackson’s passing.  Needless to say the top 10 downloads that day were ALL Michael Jackson songs.  But what surprised me the most was the number 1 song, “Man in the Mirror”.   I don’t know why but that kind of surprised me.  I thought it would have been something a little older from him.  But then again, he had so many songs how would you pick just one.  But I can’t say I would have ever guessed Man in the Mirror.   I don’t know, there’s no real point to this, I’m just saying.
