Meet the Newbies: Danny O’Brien
When we were up at Rutgers two years ago, watching one of my all time favorite road wins (that doesn’t involve the words “NC” and “State”) we saw the emergence of Chris Turner. Right then and there I looked over to my friend, and fellow TD contributor, Chris and said “It is nice to know that we will have 3 years without a QB controversy.”. And for the most part I was right. Chris Turner took hold of the job and never looked back. But the harsh reality of the situation is that Turner has gone from a young unknown talent to a savy Veteran, and this is the final year we will get to watch him in a Terrapins uniform. Where does the time go?
But as sad as it makes me feel, it also allows the opportunity for someone else to step up, and let’s face it, if you love stability, NCAA Football probably isn’t for you. And this brings us to Danny O’Brien. The job is wide open next year, and Danny will have a chance to compete for it. Danny (who couldn’t sound more Irish if he changed his name to St. Patrick O’Irish) comes to us via Kernersville North Carolina. He is 6’3″ 200 lbs.
While at East Forsyth HS in 2008 he threw for 16 TD’s to 6 interceptions and had over 1,600 yards in passing. He also ran for 780 yards and 11 more TD’s. Rivals.com has him as the 38th best “Pro Style” QB in his class, while Scout.com has him as the 58th best QB in this years incoming class.
And the best news of all is that we won’t have to worry about his academics. Danny scored over 1400 on his SATs. Danny is actually a little older than some of the other incoming kids, being born on September 26, 1990, and with that seemless transition, let’s move on to the part of the story where I make you feel old.
In 1990 the top TV Show in America was Cheers, however at this point it was the Kristy Allen version not the Shelly Long version. Which also means Danny O’Brien was never alive when Diane or Coach were on Cheers. In 1990 the top grossing movie was….Home Alone, which means Danny O’Brien is at least 8 years younger than Macaulay Culkin. And finally the top song of 1990 was Wilson Phillips “Hold On”. By the way 1990 was not a great year for music, but it beat the crap out of 1991.
So welcome to Maryland Danny O’Brien, we wish you the best.
Extra Droppings:
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Sandra Bullock, but after having 1,000 “Proposal” commercials jammed down my throat, I just have to say something. SHE PLAYS THE SAME PERSON IN EVERY MOVIE!! She has less range than Manny Ramierez in flip flops for God’s sake. OK, that’s enough, I just had to get that off my chest.
