CFN Releases 2009 Maryland Football Preview

When you follow a team as closely as we do, sometimes you feel like you have more of a pulse on the team than the national talking heads might.  This time of year however, that is not the case for me.  Sure I still look all over the place for news on the Terps, but let’s be honest.  The weather is too nice to be sitting in front of a computer.  That is where College Football News comes in.  They just released the 2009 Maryland Football Preview.  Sure we will be doing our own once we get through a week or two of Summer Practices, but for now, this is the perfect way to keep Ralph Friedgen and the Terps in our mind and excited for 2009.

You should go read it now.  Ok, I will wait for you all, so I can discuss some of the points made.  Are you done yet?

There really isn’t a lot there that we haven’t all thought about.  Can Torrey Smith really break out this year?  Will Don Brown’s pressure defense lead to more turnover’s, or will we see lots of big plays against the Terps?  Who is going to block for poor Chris Turner?  The questions can go on for ever.  What I do agree with though, is their comments about Torrey Smith.  While Darius Heyward-Bey was a big play, play maker, I feel like Torrey Smith is going to make sure he gets more touches than Darius did, and as we saw last year, he too can break a big play.

The other topic that caught my attention, was the mention of NFL scouts checking out Chris Turner.  I have never really even put him in that class.  Then again, I didn’t think of Shaun Hill as a NFL caliber player, while we watched him lead the Terps to the Orange Bowl.  I feel like only the real super stars really stand out when you watch a game (Vernon Davis, Shawne Merriman etc.)  There are players that may be good enough for the NFL, they might not be high draft picks.  So, now that I let that sink it a bit, does Turner really have a chance at the NFL?  I guess it is not too far fetched.  He is certainly ready to play against top competition.  We don’t really know what he would be capable of if he had a line to really protect him.  To me it doesn’t really seem he has the accuracy or the arm strength on the deep throws, but that could still develop.  I saw a picture of him in the tug of war competition they have somewhere, and he does look like he bulked up a little.  He seems to make pretty good reads out on the field, most of the time.  So after really thinking about it, could he sneak in to the back end of the draft?  Possibly, though unless he has a huge breakout season, I think an invite to a camp as free agent, may be more likely.  Here’s to hoping he breaks out!

Well, there are plenty of more topics we could discuss, but we need material for later!  So I am sorry if you logged on for a quick read, and I made you spend 15 minutes going over the CFN Preview, and watch a 4 minute Torrey Smith video.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Extra Droplets

The wife and I went to a BBQ yesterday, and I offered to take some beer.  In honor of our upcoming trip to see the Terps take on Cal, I went with some good old Anchor Steam.  I enjoyed it, and it got me to thinking if we are going to Napa for wine tasting, why not do some beer tasting as well?  Luckily Anchor has a two hour tour (cue the Gilligan’s Island Theme).  Maybe one more item to add to our itinerary?

I think it would be much better to be stranded in a brewery than a deserted island.

Wow, CFN really loves Torrey Smith. I was thinking pretty much the same thing, but it is nice to see it from a site with less bias!
