Belmont Predictions

Welcome back to the trainwreck that is my Triple Crown picks.  If this site were about Horse Racing, I think we would have been shut down by now, and that is saying a lot since the internet boasts all kinds of crazies.  But I will say that though I am not in an elite crowd when it comes to picking Triple Crown winners, I am in a huge crowd.  It isn’t easy.

But today I think that changes.  I have watched Mine That Bird race in both legs, and I don’t think you need to know much about horse racing to know that he is very well suited for this track.  Hell if the Preakness was as long as the Belmont, I think we would still be talking about a Triple Crown.  Throw in the fact that Calvin Borel isn’t just the hottest jockey in horse racing right now, but possibly one of the hottest athletes in the world, and it pretty much makes this a lock.

But there in lies the problem.  Mine That Bird is not going to go off for very much money.  And though watching the race horse you selected win is always fun, lets just say that fun you have is probably going to be worth more to you than the financial compensation you are going to receive at the window.  So if you want to pound your chest and say “I picked the winner”, go with Mine That Bird.  And then when he wins you can stand up and say “I told you so!”, that is if your voice isn’t drowned out by the 10 Million other people saying the exact same thing.  So I’m not making MTB my pick.

I’m going the value route.  I loved Dunkirk in the Derby, I felt like he had a terrible start and just couldn’t get going.  I think he has been given up on by a lot of people, but all that is premature.  He has a new jockey, John Velazquez, and he didn’t run in the Preakness, so he is fresh.  Now I will point out that Dunkirk isn’t exactly USA over Russia, he is afterall at 4-1 on the morning line, but as the betting opens I think the sentimentals will pull some money away from him towards MTB and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dunkirk at 5-1 or 6-1, and those are odds you can have some success with.

So if I were to make a pick today, I think I would take $2 exacta on Dunkirk-all boxed.  That would be a 36$ bet, and then hope he can place with a long shot.  So let’s see how that pans out.

(I would also like to point out that as most people know, today is June 6th, better known as D-Day.  As we remember those brave soliders who stormed the beaches of Normandy, let us not forget that a huge part of D-Day’s success was due in part to deception.  Many months worth of planning were spent making the Germans think that the invasion was going to be occuring further north along the coast.  As a result, many needed German units were too far away to contest the landing.  They assumed that Normandy was a diversion for the main attack which was to occur in the area of…….Dunkirk.  I’m just saying……….)

Extra Droppings:

Can anyone in our age group see the Little Mac commercial for Punch Out and not be immediately transported back to our parents family room?  Rarely do commercials get me so fired up that I feel I need to immediately head out and buy something, but the Little Mac Punch Out for Wii one had me at least wondering where I left my keys.  If anyone buys it, I’d love to hear a review.

I like your pick. I also liked him in the Derby, so… I also think that Punch Out commercial is awesome. It couldn’t get any more like the original game. I think come fall or winter I will pick that up. I just don’t play as many video games this time of year.

For what it’s worth the Dunkirk-All exacta box would have cost 36$ and paid out $121. That’s 90$! Of course the other two bets in the Derby and Preakness I actually made, this one I didn’t. I suck!!
