TD Presents, the Maryland Men’s Lacrosse Dropsies
I will tell you what, the women’s version is going to be a tough act to follow up on. Much like the Terps Football team, the Maryland Lacrosse team had quite a roller coaster ride of a season. I am going to take a quick peak at the high points and low points of the season, and then give out an award or two.
First of all the men finished with an 10-7 record that included a win over previously undefeated Notre Dame on the road in the NCAA Tournament. I guess that is kind of one of the highlights, and I actually watched that game. I am not an expert on lacrosse by any means, but that to me looked like total domination by the Terps. Being that I am a Maryland fan, I am going to choose my highlight of the year to be the win over 12th ranked Duke early in the season. Like it has been said many times before, beating Duke at anything is always a good thing!
Now for the low-light, well, it is tough to have this as a low-light I guess, but I am going with the 7 OT loss to UVA. The Terps had that game in bag, but the officials didn’t see it that way, and for me that is the low-light. The officials took it away, and you should never remember the officials. UVA was the number 1 team in the country, and the Terps took them 7 OT’s on the road. It is a rare day that you are in a Bar in Boston, and watching two Maryland Sporting events in a bar. While the Terps were going down to UVA, we were also watching the Women’s Basketball team at the same time.
Now there is also a personal low-light. That belongs to Jr. Goalie Brian Phipps. In the loss to Syracuse, Phipps was fired up over a missed call, and after the Orange missed a shot wide, Phipps jumped up and turned around trying to get fired up, and shredded his knee. He missed the rest of the game, and will miss fall ball.
Now for the most important award. The Turtledroppings.com team MVP for the Terps. The first annual award goes to (drum roll please). . . Grant Catalino. The sophomore from Webster, NY recorded a team high 25 goals. This was the second year he was the top goal scorer for the Terps. He also chipped in a team high 22 helpers.
So that wraps up the Men’s Lacrosse awards/recap. Stay tuned for the next sport (not sure what is up next). We are very official here you know.
Extra Droplets
I just read Maryland Basketball will be taking on Villanova in the BB & T Classic in early December. That is a big day for me since my neighbor went to Nova. Even more interesting is this game could, or could not feature two of the countries top point guards in Greivis Vasquez and Scottie Reynolds. Only time will tell.
