Swing and a Miss

This has really bugged me for quite a while and I’m not sure why I’m just now getting around to writing about it.  Maybe it is because I’m away at a training for work and I get a free USA Today each morning.  But looking at the NCAA Baseball Rankings, I’ve got to thinking, why is Maryland not a good baseball school?

Well I know what you are thinking.  We are not a warm weather school and therefore not a draw for big time baseball talent.  We’ll that is true, I think that is a disadvantage that we have to deal with, but at the same time, Oregon State has won 2 out of the last 3 College World Series.  Not only is Oregon not warm, it rains in the Pacific Northwest all the time.  I think it is high time this University took college baseball a little more seriously.

Looking at today’s rankings, UVA is 14.  Last time I checked the weather in Charlottesville is not that different from the weather in College Park.  Also Kansas State is 18th, Ohio State is 26th, GEORGE FRIGGIN MASON is 27th, Kansas is 28th followed by Minnesota, Eastern Illinois, Kent State, Louisville, Illinois and Rhode Island (not in that order, I’m just highlighting other non-warm weather teams who received votes).

It is high time Debbie Yow to can the warm weather theory and fund this program.  If anyone knows anything I don’t I would love to hear it, but from what I understand we do not fund the baseball team 100%.  I don’t know what percentage we do fund, but there is no reason we couldn’t be as successful as…gulp…Rhode Island.  We are a state rich in baseball history.  We have given the world Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken Jr, Al Kaline, Harold Baines, Brady Anderson, Mark Texiera (though I still hate him), Jimmy Foxx, and John Mabry (I’m going for a record to see how many straight posts I can work John Mabry’s name into, keep it going Bix!).  And that is just off the top of my head.

There is no reason we can’t compete in the ACC.  Currently the Terps are 23-26 overall and 7-20 in Conference play.  Is that good enough for you?  Because it isn’t good enough for me.  If this were Football, Men’s or Woman’s Basketball, either Lacrosse or Soccer team heads would be rolling, so why do we sit by and let this happen?  Can someone explain this to me?

Extra Droppings:

Just out of curiosity I googled MLB players born in Maryland, one guy who showed up was named Vic Willis who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.  On the surface it isn’t really a shame I did not know that, but when I saw he was born in Cecil County, I hung my head in shame.

St. John’s has a pretty good baseball program as well. Maryland really has no excuse to not have a decent to good baseball program.

What are the facilities like? Maybe that’s holding them back. You should see some of the facilites at the baseball powers.
