ACC Men’s Basketball Coaches Meetings This Weekend

Starting Sunday the ACC Men’s Basketball Coaches will be holding their annual meetings.  According to ESPN’s Andy Katz, one big item up for discussion is an 18 game conference schedule for the 2011-2012 season.  A decision would have to be made before the conference negotiates it’s new TV contract at the end of the 2010-2011 season.  Also up for discussion is the possibility of having two divisions similar to football. The biggest concern to this would be changing the ACC Tournament.

Personally I wonder how Commissioner Swofford feels about the expansion.  The football Championship Game has been a disaster.  Some of that could be credited to the fact that the team with the smallest fan base, and has to make the biggest road trip to get there (Boston College) has been in the last two games.  Some of it may be everyone expected Florida State and Miami to more of a national title threat, and that hasn’t happened.  The other fact could be that all along the ACC is still a basketball conference, and now they are trying to deal with the ramifications of a football driven decision to expand in the first place.  I long for the days of round robin regular season play for the ACC, but that is never going to happen.

I agree. I miss the days of playing everyone twice. But I wouldn’t give up on the ACC Championship Game yet. I hate to get North Carolina even more involved in the league, but putting that game in Charlotte makes a heck of a lot of sense. We live in Maryland, I can totally see us piling in the car with a weeks notice for a road trip to Charlotte, and still being able to go to a BCS game if they were to win. Right now, going to Florida twice in a month isn’t in many people’s budget.

But overall, I do miss playing everyone twice in Bball.

I agree, the move to have the game closer to the home of the (A)ll (C)arolina (C)onference will help the game itself, but the conference just hasn’t had national champion caliber teams since its inception.
