ACC Bowl Tie Ins

Or maybe I should call this entry the John Deere “ACC Bowl Tie In Blog” brought to you by Dell Computers.  I swear this sponsorship stuff is getting out of hand.  Anyway, the ACC has announced the bowl tie ins for the 2009 season.  Not much new, but there are some shake up’s near the end.  Here is the list in order of their pick of ACC Schools, with my comments following:

1. Fed Ex Orange Bowl, Miami Florida, January 5, 2010 at 8:00 pm on Fox

Comments- No news here, it is hard to mess up the Big Bowls, they are all in great locations and usually feature top teams that people want to see.  Going to Miami as a reward for winning the Conference remains a top prize…unless of course you are Miami, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there, right Cane’s!

2. Chick-fil-a Bowl, Atlanta Georgia, December 31, 2009 7:30 pm on ESPN

Comments- Always great to go to Atlanta, a lot of great Maryland memories.  The National Championship, routing Tennessee, me and my wife getting engaged on top of Stone Mountain…okay, maybe they aren’t all great memories (just joking, I kid because I love!).  Anyway, Atlanta is a great town, easy to get to and did I mention that is where we won the National Championship?

3. Konica Minolta Gator Bowl, Jacksonville Florida, January 1, 2010 1:00 pm on CBS

Comments- Well techincally Jacksonville is in Florida, so that has to be good right?  Rumor has it since we whipped WVU in the Gator Bowl, Jacksonville has increased it’s number of hotels to 2, so now 45 more people don’t have to stay 30 minutes from downtown when they travel to any sporting event in Jacksonville.  Regardless if the Terps make it back to the Gator Bowl this year (which I would obviously take) we could be one of the first football games of the new decade.

4. Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Florida, December 29, 2009 at 8:00 pm on ESPN

Comments- Another chance for the Terps to travel somewhere warm over the holidays.  The plus about this one is that it is in Orlando so you can convince the family that you are going to Disney World, and while we are down there we might as well check out the Football game.

5. Gaylord Hotel’s Music City Bowl in Nashville Tennessee December 27, 2009 at 8:15 on ESPN

Comments- I am still bitter about the time I went to Nashville.  We left BWI and it was in the upper 50′s.  We landed in Tennessee and it was in the 20′s and snowing.  Then when people found out we were from Maryland they said “I see you brought the cold weather with you”.  I had to bite my tongue not to explain to them that it was colder in Tennessee than it had been all year in Maryland.  I’m strange that way.  Anyway, the Music City Bowl combines a cool fun city with colder weather.  If you could put Nashville in Jackonsville’s climate, and vice versa, the Music City Bowl would rock…and the Gator Bowl would be the Humanitarian Bowl of the east.

6. Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina, on December 26, 2009 at 4:30 pm on ESPN

Comments- The weather is similar to Nashville, but the trip is a lot closer from Maryland.  One of the few Bowl games that you can drive to.  Now when it comes to post season play, you never want to play in a Bowl game that is driveable from DC, because quite frankly there aren’t many good Bowl games close to our neck of the woods.  But when it comes to affordability and being able to bring along all our tailgating equipment, you can’t beat the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

7. Emerald Bowl in San Fransico, California December 26, 2009 at 8:00 pm on ESPN

Honestly, could you think of a worse bowl game for us to go to after facing Cal in early September?  I don’t think I can swing two trips to the Bay Area in 4 months no matter how much I’d want to.  The good thing though would be getting another crack at the PAC 10.  I don’t care the outcome, when it comes to playing WVU or Rutgers or Navy or whomever else, I’d rather see an Arizona, or a Washington, or some other team we don’t come across on the East Coast.  Just my take.

8. Eagle Bank Bowl in Washington DC, on December 29, 2009 at 4:30 pm on ESPN

Comments- Does anyone else have a feeling that this game was invented for Maryland-Navy?  I mean for God’s sake they moved the date back so it wouldn’t coincide with Maryland’s finals!  They are just dying to get us.  It is like Vader telling Skywalker that joining the Dark Side is his destiny.  Only Ralph Friedgen can be the one morally strong enough to stand up and say no (as we plumet to the bottom of Lando’s city in the clouds).  We can hope to avoid this as long as possible, but lets face it, it is going to happen one year.  The good news is that we can tailgate as if it were a regular home game.  In fact, would I be so bold to say the Eagle Bank Bowl is a Edward 40 Hands Mandatory game (I know one Terp fan in Boston who would probably agree!).

9. GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Alabama on January 6, 2010 at 7:00 on ESPN

Comments- Here is where we have a change in the line up.  Out is the Humanitarian Bowl, in is the GMAC Bowl.  I don’t know too much about Mobile, but I do have a cousin in the Military and currently stationed at UCLA, no not the PAC 10 school, but what he calls the “Ugly Corner of Lower Alabama”.  Now granted he is in Southeast Alabama, but I can’t imagine Moblie being much better.

So there you have it.  Now let’s just hope we have enough wins where Bowl locations is the topic of our conversation come late November.

Extra Droppings:

Great news for me!  Rumor on the street there could be a “Clueless” sequel.  Oh GOD PLEASE BE TRUE!!

The other reason I like the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, is they go around (or used to anyway) and give out free food to your whole tailgate. I think that must have been when the opened the new one in Stamp Student Union, but still, I will NEVER forget that.

Their brownies are very tasty. I really missed them last year. Maybe if we go to the GMAC bowl they will give away free cars at one of the tailgates. I mean if they can’t sell them, why not give them to folks who could use them?
