2009 Dropsie Awards: Baseball

Before we get into the Dropsie Awards for Baseball, we first need to report that after nine years at the helm of Maryland Baseball, Terry Rupp resigned today.  Rupp had a career mark of 227-271 over that span, with an ACC record of 61-183.  As bad as it sounds Rupp did make some progress during his tenure.  For example the 2009 Terps won 10 ACC games which doesn’t sound like a lot, but is the most ACC wins for the program since 1972.  He also produced 4 MLB players in his 9 years at Maryland.

Moving on to some lighter news, the one great thing about baseball is that statistics are statistics.  Of course steriods have kind of fogged that all up at the MLB level, but unlike Lacrosse, if I see what a player does over the course of the season, it makes a lot more sense to me and it is easy to put into some sort of context.  And though you would think that would make doing the baseball Dropsie’s easy, it really didn’t.  In fact I could have gone 3 different ways on the Offensive MVP, but in the end I settled on Mike Murphy.

That’s right Mike Murphy come on down!  Mike comes to Maryland via Silver Spring, MD (Birthplace of Brady Anderson).  It was a tough choice, but Mike’s slugging percentage of .608 gave him the edge.  Only 2 other Terps slugged over .500.  Mike hit .318 with 17 doubles, 12 homeruns, and 43 RBI’s.  So Congratulations Mike on your successful year.  Oh and in case you were wondering the runner ups were David Poutier and A. J. Casario (sounds like more of a soccer name if you ask me, but in this case it isn’t).

On the other side of the ball, we have the…I guess we’ll call it the PItching Dropsie.  This award goes to, you guessed it, the best pitcher on the staff.  So without further delay (I have to get up early on the off chance that the Soap Network plays 10 straight episodes of 90210 like they did last weekend), Dan Getzler.  Dan comes to Maryland from Berwyn, PA (home of a pretty solid HS Football Program if I’m not mistaken).  Dan was a reliever who recoreded 7 saves, posted an ERA of 3.13, and had 27 K’s to 8 walks.  Dan also had 3 wins, and though that doesn’t sound like much, you have to consider that the team leader in wins only had 5.  So that isn’t too bad for a closer.  So congratulations on your Dropsie Dan, to claim your award, just contact us with your mailing address!

As for the team, the Dropsie for the highlight of the year, and I’m going to borrow from the Men’s Lax Dropsie post, is beating Duke 2 out of 3 games back in April.  Hey when winning 10 conference games is good, taking two from somebody had to be a highlight.  As for the season lowlights (which does not get a Dropsie, just a causual mention to fill out the article a little more) it had to be losing to Georgia Tech 24-3.

And there you have the 2009 Dropsie Awards for Baseball, to recap:

Offensive Dropsie Award- Mike Murphy

Pitching Dropsie Award- Dan Getzler

Now with today’s breaking baseball news we are leaving this awards ceremony with the state of the program up in the air.  But hopefully a replacement can be found to build upon what Rupp started and really get the program to the next level, which would be qualifying for the ACC Tournament.  I think it can be done (as I’ve written about earlier).  So congratulations to all our winners.
