Terps Hold Final Scrimmage Before Red White Game

The Terps held their second scrimmage yesterday at Byrd Stadium.  Last weeks scrimmage belonged to the defense.  This weeks belonged to Torrey Smith and the offense.  Smith had 5 catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns.  He also recorded a TD with a 96 yard kick off return.

Chris Turner again didn’t have great numbers, and one of his three interceptions was returned by Jamari McCollough for a defensive TD.  Turner was 9-25 for 154 yards, 2 TD’s, and 3 interceptions.  Depsite the poor numbers, Coach Friedgen talked about how Turner “played better”.

What may have been one of the biggest question marks this spring (other than the lines) is how capable of a backup is Jamar Robinson going to be for Maryland.   Well his numbers yesterday seem to indicate that he should be a fine back up.  He was 15-19 for 254 yards and 4 TD’s.  It appeared most of his action was against the second team defense.

Overall the Terps WR corps had a big day.  In addition to Torrey Smith, Adrian Cannon had 3 catches for 132 yards and TD, and Kevin Dorsey had 4 catches for 79 yards and TD.

Morgan Green led the Maryland running backs on the day with 6 carries for 61 yards.  He drew praise from Ralph Friedgen for “running hard”.  Da’ Rel Scott was injured in the game and suffered a grade 1 ACL strain after being tackled in the knee by Nolan Carroll.  Carroll was also injured on the play and was taken to the hospital after a neck injury.  The x-rays’s were negative, but is suffering from a concussion and spent the night in the hospital as a precaution.  Both players are likely done for the spring.

Defensively, there weren’t as many sacks this week.  As a fan, I am fine with that!  I am not sure if it is a sign of the offensive line improving or not, but if our defense was able to get 8 sacks, I hate to think what some other teams might be able to do.  This week there were only 3 sacks, but they still made three interceptions.  One was a deflected pass, but still an interception at the end of the day.  Cameron Chism made 11 tackles and Kenny Tate had 7.  What I do like is line backers and corners had a couple of tackles for a loss.  I think I am going to like watching this aggressive defense.  That is until we get torched for a big play.  In all honesty, I can live with giving up the occasional big play as long as the defense is able to make it’s share of them as well.

This week is Maryland’s final week of Spring Practice.  There is a session Tuesday and Thursday, and then Saturday is the Red White Game.  There is an autograph session at 12:30 and the game begins at 3:30.

I am worried about Scott. To us, August seems like a lifetime away. When you are a RB with an injury, August is like 3 weeks. Hopefully he recovers and hopefully Morgan takes advantage of his extra touches. I know this team is young and in-experienced, but I really love their upside. I think we could be in for a fun season.
