Count Down to Darrius’s Big Day
Well we are in the final week leading up to Draft Day. Now I love the NFL, it is a great league, perhaps the pinicle of what professional sports could be (are you listening Bud Selig?). But I don’t get excited for the draft. I mean how exciting is it to watch an event that you really can’t judge for 5 years? I will never forget watching the draft where the Eagles took Mike Mumula, if I had that hour of my life back I could have been playing Sega or doing something else more fun.
But this week I am excited because for it is a big day for Darrius Heyward-Bey. I think all Terps fans can agree that we want nothing but the best for Darrius, and though I don’t know him, didn’t help him in his career, and he couldn’t pick me out of a crowd with a picture of me in his hand, I still want him to succeed in what he does with the rest of his career. So for him this is a big day. Though we will know the answer soon enough, I want to take a few minutes to look at some sites and figure out where he could possibly end up this Saturday:
walterfootball.com has him going 40th overall to the Oakland Raiders. I personally hope he goes a lot earlier, and definitely to a different team, though it would probably increase the odds of him being at the Maryland Cal game next year considerably!
draftcountdown.com has him going 26th to the Baltimore Ravens. This obviously would be a good fit. The Raven’s need some WR help, and it would definitely please the local MD/Raven fans. Personally though I think Baltimore is going to head in a different direction, but what do I know.
The Baltimore Sun’s Ken Murray has him going 17th to the Jets. I would be happy with that. Murray however also thinks the Jets could trade up out of that spot, making his prediction worthless. If Darrius does go to the Jets he could always tell his grandkids that though he never played with Brett Favre, he did play the year after Favre left New York. Not nearly as interesting, but a true story.
draftking.com actually has Darrius going to Oakland, but this time as the 7th overall pick. Again, I’m not high on him going to Oakland, and going as the 7th pick I think sets the expectations for him a little high. I’d be thrilled to see him go that quick, but I don’t think it would be a good fit, in my humble opinion.
footballsfuture.com also has Darrius going to the Raven’s at the 26th pick. Again, I don’t think it would happen, but I would be pretty happy. Unlike if he went out to the Bay Area, Heyward-Bey would actually be pretty easy to follow in Baltimore.
And finally, because honestly there are like a million of these mock draft sites, squidoo.com has Heyward-Bey going to the Jets at 17.
So there you have it. No one really knows how this Saturday will go, but there does seem to be a feeling that Darrius could be going to either Baltimore, New York, or Oakland. I guess time will tell.
Extra Droppings:
Well the offical snake count on my property is up to 3 on the year. The latest one was on Sunday. I was mowing the grass and as I passed the front porch for the second time, the poor guy jumped out of the long grass into the mowed grass about 10 feet in front of me. It reminded me of those old Western movies where the bad guy runs out of bullets and jumps into the clear yelling “Don’t shoot! I give up!”. I watched this 2 foot reptile for about 5 minutes and realized that he lives in a hole under a bush in front of our first story bedroom. Which means he sleeps about 15 feet from where I sleep. A relaxing thought. Anyway, as I said earlier, the official count for 2009 is up to 3. I wish it was the same one 3 times, but it doesn’t appear that is the case.

Where is the Kevin Barnes predictions? Just kidding. I too have seen/heard all kinds of predictions for Hey-Bey. I hope it is not Oakland for many reasons QB, lack of TV coverage etc.

Oakland is the black hole of the league. Their owner is crazy, they have a new coach every year, and their QB was the first overall pick has never done anything besides maybe throw picks.
