Thoughts onMen’s Tournament and Spring Football Notes
It was a great second week of the tournament. Some of that may have been boosted by the fact the East Regional was in my home town of Boston, and I got to go see one of the best tournament games in years, but there were some good games, and some head scratchers out there. One of the head scratchers is wrapping up now as UNC is putting the final touches on a surprisingly easy win over Oklahoma. Another head scratcher was the absolute dismantling of Louisville by Michigan St. UConn made it in with a nice win over Missouri. The final spot in the Final Four belongs to Villanova, thanks to Scottie Reynolds’ heroics late in the game. We had seats in the Duke section Thursday, so you would have thought I was Nova grad sitting there. I was cheering every make and stop like it was the Terps out there. I have never enjoyed seeing a team lose so much!
Then on Saturday, it appeared the Nova fans bought up all the Duke and Xavier tickets. Pitt had its share of fans, but nothing like Nova. It was a great game, that Nova looked like they wanted to give away, and when Sam Young hit that three, and then Villanova turned it over, you thought for sure we were going to see overtime. The fact that Mr. Clutch LaVance Fields was out there, you never could count them out. Credit Villanova for hanging on when it appeared they were trying to give it away.
So the Final Four is set, and it should be exciting. I would like to see anyone who has this one in their brackets. In our bracket pool I picked UNC to win it all, and after this week, I still think they are the ones to beat. Now, just to show you I am no expert, they are the only team I got into the Final Four, but I think they are on a mission, not unlike the 2002 Terps.
Now that we get another short reprieve from all the madness of March, it is spring football season. And to date Maryland Football has had three practices. Again this season the team is divided into to 10 “teams” and they are holding an internal competition. It includes weight room workouts, academic marks, and on field achievements. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. They took part in the Oklahoma drill, and it appears that almost every running back on the Terps depth chart scored. It was noted, Jamar Robinson threw a couple of touchdown passes in the goal line competition as well. Early enrollee, freshman LB Darren Drakeford was credited with the hardest hit of the day. Just a few more quick notes, Drew Gloster has moved from TE to LB, and early enrollee Avery Murray has showed a lot of promise at LB, and Friedgen seems to think he will figure into the depth chart this year.
