Lady Terps Advance to Sweet Sixteen and Spring Football Begins
Where to begin with this Maryland article? There is so much to cover. As the title suggest, the Lady Terps Basketball team defeated Utah 71-56 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Seniors Marissa Coleman (18 points and 18 rebounds) and Kristi Toliver (17 points) led the way in a game that was close for the first 8 minutes or so. By halftime the score was 44-28. The game really belonged to Coleman. She was everywhere. Blocked shots, rebounds, loose balls. You name it she was doing it well on the court last night. With the win the Terps will take on #4 seeded Vanderbilt in Raleigh Saturday at 2:30 on ESPN or ESPN2.
The next of many important Maryland sports related articles focuses on the Terps football team’s 2009 spring practice season. It began Tuesday. I think this is something we will focus on in more detail, but here are some key points and story lines for the spring season. First, Kenny Tate is going to stay at safety. With the depth at wide receiver, I think this is the best move for everyone involved. I really think this will allow the Terps to keep more of the talented players on the field on both sides of the ball. A second spring story is Dion Armstrong and Bruce Campbell are sitting out the spring to focus on academics. You can look at this two ways. One we are missing key parts off both lines, or this allows the Terps to work on depth during the spring. We all know one thing Maryland needs is depth on the lines! The story I will be paying the most attention to is, how does Jamar Robinson do? Sure we all know for the first time in about 5 or 6 years who our opening day quarterback is going to be. That being said after Chris Turner, there is not another quarterback on the roster that has meaningful playing time. Mr. Robinson, it is time to show us what you have got.
Now I am going to recap a quick article Jeff Barker had in the Baltimore Sun today. It is mostly about James Franklin’s guaranteed million dollars if he is not chosen as the successor to Ralph Friedgen. That seems fine to me. He is also guaranteed to be paid the average of all ACC coaches when and if he does take over. Nothing to shocking there. Barker also got some info on Gary William’s contract, that was news to me. I knew he had a clause that each year he made the tournament and the team met some minimum credit requirements, he got a one year extension. What I didn’t know was that he was guaranteed an Assistant AD position in the Maryland Athletic Department if he stayed through 2011. I hadn’t heard that, and I have said he would be great to replace Debbie Yow when he steps down. Now what makes this interesting to me is that it is for the Assistant Athletic Director’s position, which is currently held by Kathy Worthington. Maybe, this is part of the reason there were some fireworks between the two this year when Debbie Yow was at her sister Kay Yow’s funeral, and the Men’s Basketball team was struggling. I don’t know for sure, but it would certainly make sense to me!
I was really busy today, so I don’t know if there is any news on this in the Washington Times, and I haven’t read anything written in the other paper since the Lance Stephenson/Under Armour article in the paper whom I won’t name. Speaking of Lance Stephenson/Born Ready, he is going to announce April 1st at the McDonalds All-American Game. I think that favors Maryland or Kansas (rumblings are that it is KU), and not St. Johns. He was originally going to announce after his HS tournament in NYC. Everyone seems to think the fact that he delayed it, is because he didn’t want to announce another school in St. Johns’ area.
So that is kind of the state of everything Maryland Sports for right now. Oh yeah I almost forgot one last thing. The wrestling team finished 10th in the NCAA Tournament over the weekend. Congrats to them and stay tuned for more info on spring football, and you never know when there is going to be a cornucopia of things to talk about! GO TERPS!

The part of the contract about Gary being given the assistant AD job has more to do with money than anything else. I think it is in there incase of a buyout. If he were to be forced out they would have to pay him what he would make as the Assistant AD as well as what he would make as the basketball coach. Who knows how long that stipulation has been in the contract too. It may be around from before Debbie Yow was AD. I think we all know that their is no chance the two of them work side by side in the Athletic Department.
