All Eyes are on Virginia

There are literally a million reasons I’m glad I don’t play for the Maryland Men’s Basketball team (insert your own intermural basketball joke here, but I wasn’t on the team that needed a buzzer beater to beat a team of exchange students who only had 4 players!).  But I am mostly glad I’m not on the team is because I feel just spent.  Now maybe it’s the cold I’m battling, but that loss to Wake really took the wind out of my sails.

Had we been able to hold on to that we could just about end all this bubble talk, but we didn’t and as a result we are right back to where we have been all year, squarely on the previously mentioned bubble.  So all those games, and the emotional roller coaster, all the negative Washington Post articles, have all lead us to this one spot.  Maryland plays UVA in Charlottesville for a chance to finish 8-8 in the toughest conference in the country (Pipe Down Big East, what do you have like 30 teams now?).

I have said all year long that I think 8-8 gets us in.  Now I have been careful not to make any mention of ACC game #17 which is the first round of the Conference Tournament, but I’m afraid I can no longer ignore that elephant in the room.  I think 8-8 with a win in the Georgia Dome gets us in.  A win at UVA and a loss in the first round, I’m still going to say “In” but that may just be a good case of wishcasting (I borrowed that term from when weatherman make their prediction based on what they want to happen, or what people want to hear).

But if you notice in every scenario that has us dancing the 8-8 regular season is the first thing that has to fall in line, which brings us to Virginia.  The whole season boils down to what we do this Saturday.  Once again the Terps have been backed into a corner.  Everytime that has happened this year, they have responded.  Will Saturday be any different?  Well if it isn’t then we can chalk this season down as rollercoaster ride that ultimately de-rails.  Regardless make sure your safety belt is secure and keep your hands inside the car, looks like there is one more hill coming up.

Extra Droppings:

If you are looking to cheer on the Terps tonight, but find there is no men’s basketball game, you can do the next best thing and hope that UNC beats Virginia Tech tonight in Blacksburg.  Sure it’s like Standard Oil driving Mom and Pop’s Gas Station out of business, but remember progress is a good thing.  In all seriousness you can cheer for VT to upset somebody next year.

Cut me some slack I had a fever of 101 F when I wrote that. I’m just glad it wasn’t about purple monkeys or some other fever induced hallucination!!
