Maryland Wins First Road Game of the Year VS Georgia Tech
This is not what you would call a thing of beauty. I believe the teams combined for forty turnovers. I think there were more camera shots of the coaches shaking their heads after turnovers than made baskets. It doesn’t really matter as Maryland walks out of Alexander Memorial Colosseum with a a huge win. GT had one ACC win, and if Maryland wants to be in any kind of talk about the tournament, this was a must win. It was actually more huge in the fact that a loss would have sunk them.
Eric Hayes got back into the starting lineup tonight due to the illness of Adrian Bowie, and had a hot start. He sank a couple of three pointers early and helped the Terps get out to an early lead. Cliff Tucker also got into the action early by also sinking a couple of quick three’s. However, Maryland never likes to make anyting easy, and even when Georgia Tech went almost 8 minutes without a FG, the Terps were spinning their own wheels.
I made a mental note at the 7:04 mark, that GT had more turnovers, than made baskets, yet was actually winning the game. I just couldn’t figure that one out! Maryland had it share of unforced turnovers as well and that allowed Tech to stay in the game. The second half though belonged to GreivisVasquez. He made sure Maryland wasn’t going to lose on this night. He finished with 19 points, 14 of them in the second half. He scored inside, outside and got to the free throw line. It wasn’t his best all around performance, but he was clutch at crunch time. That being said it still took a missed shot at the buzzer for the Terps to pull this one out.
It was not the type of game I expected to see after getting 90 plus points against UNC. Then to come out against a team that commits 24 turnovers and to only score 57 doesn’t make any sense to me. But that is why we tune in and watch these games. You just never really know what they are going to show from game to game. More on this one to follow.
