Stand Still Already!
Just taking a quick look at the ACC #’s while the Conference season is still in it’s infancy, and one thing really jumps out at me is that Maryland is first in the league in Free Throws. They are shooting 79.1% while Duke is the next closest with 73.8%. Funny thing is, when the Terps have to run the offense, and shoot not standing at the foul line, we go from 1st to 12th! That’s right, Maryland is first in free throws and last in Field Goal %. Now for anyone who has watched the last two games, it really shouldn’t be a surprise that we are last in FG’s, but what is surprising is as the Terps move back to the 3 point line they are actually better off.
OK, not really, they are 11th in the league shooting the 3, so by saying they are better off taking a three pointer instead of moving closer to the basket, is kind of skewing the statistics. And going from 12th to 11th isn’t really the kind of improvement you want to throw a parade over. It’s kind of like when Mississippi passed Louisina this year in education going from 50th to 49th, sure it’s a step in the right direction, but it isn’t going on the “Welcome to Mississippi” road sign.
Now looking at individual stats, Greivis has been the man. He is 5th in the Conference in scoring averaging 17.5 points a game. He is also surprisingly 20th in rebounding, pretty good considering it’s another category we’re last in! Greivis is also 4th in assists, and of course 1st in Free Throw shooting (94%). Grievis isn’t the only Terp that can pass the ball though, Eric Hayes is second in the conference in Assist to Turnover ratio at 2.3. Though we’ve only played one conference game (note these stats are not stricly ACC stats, they include all non-conference games) it’s intresting to see where we sit in comparision to the rest of the conference, at least at this point of the season.
Extra Droppings
The BCS National Championship game featuring Florida and Oklahoma didn’t have much regional appeal. But you wont’ be able to say that about the Super Bowl, of the 4 teams that can advance, only Arizona isn’t nearby. Should make for some tense football watching parties throughout the region.
