Red, White, and Blue
We’re all pretty sure we will be seeing blue when we tune into the Humanitarian Bowl on December 30th, but based on recent media reports, probably not much red and white. I had heard rumblings that ticket sales from both schools have been slow leading up to our show down with Nevada. I believe one report had Maryland selling 24 tickets and Nevada selling 18 or something along those lines. Those reports have turned out to be false, or at least extremely out dated, but the truth isn’t much better. In fact no one is being really forthcoming with the truth, which isn’t exactly a good sign. We all know when we got the Humanitarian Bowl invite that this would probably be the case, but this is pretty bad.
It got much worse when I was listening to Fox Sports Radio this morning and they mentioned it as one of their stories. Now granted the host Steve Czaban (for the record, I really enjoy his show for what it’s worth) works with two UM alumns and I think he brought the story up to rub it in their face as much as anything, but the fact remains, tickets sales have been anything but good. So I figured I would take a look into what it would cost me if I were to Travel to Boise with my wife for the Humanitarian Bowl. So here goes:
Flights- As everyone probably knows there are no direct flights to Boise from BWI. You can either go through Salt Lake City (say hello to the cast of Big Love!), or you can go through Denver (say hello to the cast of Dynasty? That was in Denver right?). Then depending on your flight you will land in Boise anywhere from 5.5 to 7.5 hours after your plane left the ground at BWI. Cost $530 to $583. Total cost for me and the wife: $1060 (using the cheapest option). By the way you could fly to Atlanta on the same dates non stop anywhere from $253 to $268 a person.
Hotels- Here is where you make back some money. The hotels in Boise are actually pretty cheap. I found rooms near downtown and Boise State for just $48 a night, and even the more pricey joints were only $75 a night. Grand Total for the family (we’ll round it to $50 and say 3 nights) is $150.
Football Game- I had to dig for this one since no one actually knows anyone who bought a ticket to the Humanitarian Bowl, but the tickets cost $50 each. That would cost $100 for the family. Truth be told though we do know at least one guy who bought tickets, I don’t fully understand the way they give out Terp points, but you’d think that’d get us at least a little closer to the 50 yard line…how ’bout it Terp Club?
Total- So not counting any meals, taxi rides, or the countless Boise souviners we would surely buy, the grand total of a trip for two to the Humanitarian Bowl from BWI is…..$1310. Yikes. When you look at the hard economics of the situation, there is little doubt that ticket sales are struggling.
Extra Droppings
Just want to say thanks to whoever is reading the site. We are working hard to keep it fresh and original (we’ll fresh anyway!). But with the Holidays there are going to be periods where we probably won’t be able to update as often as we’d like. Just hang in there, as Terps Basketball fires back up we’ll be sure to plenty active.
