Maryland Basketball vs Bryant University Preview

Ok, raise your hand if (without the help of Google) you can tell me where Bryant is located.  I have to admit, according to Mapquest it is only 51 miles from my home here in Boston and I had no idea.  Does that give you any help?  How does Smithfield, RI sound?  Now that we know where they are located, here is a little more info about our next opponent.  Were you aware the nickname was the Bulldogs?  Me either.  The school was founded in 1863 and has 3,365 full and part time students.  Their website offers some significant events during their history.  Most of them have to do with accreditation, monies raised, and programs they they offer.  Boring.

Some famous Alumni.  You may not know these people by name, but you will know them.  Nicholas Colasanto- Coach on Cheers.  Andrew Thomas- President and CEO of Heineken USA.  Chris Burns – ABA Basketball player for the Manchester Millrats.  They don’t have many names that jump off the page at you, but they have a page a mile long of people that are presidents, vp’s and CEO’s of many national companies.  I guess when you are a business school, those are the types of Alumni you will have.

Now onto Athletics.  In 2007 Bryant began the process of becoming a Division I athletics program.  By 2012 they will be a full member of the Northeast Conference.  In 2005 they were the runner up for the Division II Basketball Championship.  In all it seems they have been a very successful DII program.  They have been to College World Series, Football tournament, and as mentioned above a runner up in hoops since 2004.

This years team is a different story however.  They have started the season at 1-9 with the lone win (some of us will chuckle at this) coming at the hands of Quinnipiac.  They have played a tough schedule so far losing to the likes of UConn, Iowa, Rutgers, and Providence to name a few.  Cecil Grisham is leading the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game while hitting 41% of his threes.  He is the only player in double digits.  Andrew Lyell is leading the team with 4.0 rebounds per game.

Well there you have it.  The game is not televised, so I guess I will be firing up the XM to listen to Johnny and Knocke.  IF, and this should be a huge IF, they lose, there will be one less author on this blog!  Hope Santa was good to everyone.
