Maryland Basketball Defeats Bryant University 72-51

Maryland continued its winning ways against over matched Bryant University Saturday at Comcast Center.  I have to admit I am writing this after listening to the game on XM.  I forgot it was available on ACC Select, but I had some other things going on at the same time anyway.  The Terps improve to 9-2 on the season.  The key to this game was jumping out to an early lead thanks to a hot shooting start.  MD started the game shooting 10-16 early in the first half.  Included in that start was scoring from all 5 scorers before any substitutions were made.  That kind of balance is nice to see, but will it last?  When the rubber hits the road, will they continue to share the ball?  Or will Greivis Vasquez try to become the one man wrecking crew that sometimes exposes its ugly head.  As I say that Bryant made a little bit of a run half way through the first, and it was that one man wrecking crew who righted the ship.  Vasquez canned a couple of consecutive 3′s and MD went on to take a 42-25 first half lead.  Two key stats stand out for me in the first half.  Bryant outrebounded MD 20-15 and Maryland had 18 points off Bryant Turnovers.  The rebounding is a bit of a concern, but the points off turnovers has got to continue all season long.

The second half started out as you would hope.  Vasquez got a couple of quick baskets and made sure there was not going to be a run by Bryant.  MD was a little sloppy in the second half, but did manage to even out the rebounding margin for the game.  Vasquez lead the way in scoring today with 19 points, Milbourne continued his strong play with 15 points, and Eric Hayes chipped in with 14.  Looking over the final stats, here is one you will like.  The three primary ball handlers (Vasquez, Hayes, and Bowie) combined for 15 assists and only 4 turnovers.  A very good ratio.  I believe Johnny Holiday mentioned Vasquez moved into 4oth place on the all time scoring list.  Chris McCray is the next to fall, and there will be several more before the season ends.  If he stays for all four years, and MD can get him a couple of extra games by getting into the tournament and advancing, he could wind up with 2000 points and near the top 5 all time.

Next up is Elon on Tuesday night.  Hopefully we will be celebrating a bowl victory before listening to the Basketball game at 8 pm.
