Getting to Know Elon
With the Humanitarian Bowl and Basketball game against Elon coming up fast on Tuesday, I figured I better get this out there so you know a little about Elon before I run out of time. I do remember this about Elon. Way back when I was in 11th grade, maybe even 10th, Elon was one of the first colleges to send me a brochure. From the pictures it looked like a great place. Plenty of sun and warm weather. Looking back at it now, that is about all it would have had for me!
I think most of us know Elon is in North Carolina, in fact it is in Elon, NC. Another small school on our winter tune up schedule, Elon has 4,992 undergrad students. Surprisingly 10% of the students are from MD. (It must be that nice brochure they mail out to prospective students). That is the second highest state after NC. It cost a whopping $31,846 (now I remember why it wasn’t on my short list of places to go) for room and board. Now that we are past the dull info parts, were you aware Spike Lee used part of Elon’s campus for “Tech University” in He Got Game? Jesus Shuttleworth must have also received the same brochure but with Elon crossed out and Tech U written in its place! Notable alumni include: Ward Burton-Nascar, Frank Haith- Miami University Head Basketball Coach, Jim Morris-Head Coach University of Miami Basketball coach (I am not making that up) Jack McKeon- MLB manager, Joe West-MLB Umpire and Patrick Singleton- Bermudan Olympian in Luge and Skeleton. You would think if you were coming to the states for college and your dream was for the Luge, you would go to Albany or something near Lake Placid. Shows you what I know. They also have a list of people who were President and CEO’s most notably of Wendy’s.
Now onto the Athletics. The nickname is the Phoenix and they participate in the Southern Conference. Good Luck guarding Steph Curry. The basketball team is 4-4 this year with losses coming to WVU, Tennessee-Martin, Virginia Tech, and College of Charleston. Thier wins have come against Southern Virginia, The Citadel, Lipscomb, and Lees-McCrae. Brett James and Ola Atoyebi are both scoring over 15 point a game for the Phoenix, while they both lead the team in rebounding with 5.1 a piece. As a team they are shooting 38% from three and only 59% from the free throw line.
So there you have it, a little background on Tech U, I mean Elon. Thankfully Jesus Shuttleworth/Ray Allen isn’t going to be suiting up anytime soon for the Phoenix. Hopefully you are little more informed about our next opponent and hopefully we will be celebrating a bowl win before the tip of this game! Go Terps.
