Getting to know, Boise Idaho!
The city of Boise sits just beneath the Rocky Mountains on a high desert plain. Its history begins way back in the early 1800’s when the Hudson Fur Company founded it in 1834. Later in the century the town bustled during the gold rush. The population declined after the gold rush and in 1870 the town only had 995 residents. The population began to rise again in 1902 when irrigation was brought to the area. A dam was built in 1915 and was the tallest in the world until 1932. In the late 1930’s there was a large influx of Basques from the Western Pyrenees Mountains. Today Boise has the largest population of Basques per capita outside of their native homeland. (Makes you wonder why they aren’t the Boise Basques instead of the Broncos.) Today Boise is Idaho’s largest metro area with 208,209 residents. Boise is the center for government, commerce, and banking in the state and is located half way between Salt Lake City, Utah and Portland Oregon.
Boise has three professional sports teams. The Idaho Steelheads are a West Coast League hockey team. The Boise Hawks are a minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The Idaho Stampede is a member of the Continental Basketball Association.
Boise has 2,700 acres of parks. There are 15 museums to visit including the World Center for Birds of Prey, the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, the Idaho Historical Museum, and the Boise Zoo. Boise also has horse racing but only from May through August. Boise also has a number of microbreweries and one hard liquor distillery.
Boise has a crime rate below the national average. The average salary is $42,432 per year. The average home costs $248,900. The local newspaper is the Idaho Statesman. The climate of Boise is dry, with low humidity yet they enjoy all four seasons. The winters are cool and the summers are warm. Boise averages over 21” of snowfall a year so there are many winter sports to be enjoyed. There are 3 ski resorts in the area. There are 13 golf courses for your enjoyment during the spring, summer, and fall. Boise is surrounded by two mountain ranges. The Rockies and the Owyhee Mountain Range
Lastly, Boise State is the largest university with 18,876 full and part time students. They are part of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and as stated earlier their mascot is the Bronco. (All information from www.boise.org)
