6-0?
Ah yes, it’s that time of the year. The College Football regular season is over, the early season basketball tournaments have all come and gone, and all there is to do is sit through a string of Maryland vs. “Insert Token Small School Here” games, until we open up conference play vs. Georgia Tech. Though it is easy to fall asleep on Maryland basketball this time of year, this stretch we have coming up is actually pretty important.
As we sit right now the Terps are 7-2, and we have some pretty solid resume wins. The first one obviously being the Michigan State Win, and the second one being the Michigan win. By the way Michigan beating Duke not only warms our heart as Terps fans, but makes our win over them look even prettier, it’s like the gift that keeps on giving! But the point is, the only flaws on our resume are from two pretty solid schools. We don’t really have any blemishes up to this point.
And that is where this next stretch comes in. Looking at these games individually they don’t seem like much. Delaware State, American, Bryant, Elon, Charlotte, and Morgan State, on that list Charlotte is really the only one I can picture losing. But let’s look at it as a collective group. 5-1 isn’t going to cut it. We are going to have to be 6-0 because let’s face it, if the selection committee has any reason to keep you out of the tournament, they’ll use it, it’s hard narrowing the field down as it is. But going 6-0 isn’t by any means a lay up. LIke I said each game individually, no problem. But when you have to do something over and over that’s when you get into trouble.
Picture a 10 sided dice (A little Dungeons and Dragons like, but stick with me). Say the game is to roll anything but a 1. Rolling that dye one time, no problem, you feel pretty good, but if you have to do it again, then again, then again, then you realize you could get into trouble. And that’s what the Terps have to be weary of. We need to go into Confernce play 13-2. Looking at the schedule it doesn’t seem like a stretch, but you never know, just one slip up and we could spend selection Sunday wondering what would have happened if only we had beaten “Insert Token Small School Here”.
So as you are watching basketball these next couple weeks. Keep in mind, we aren’t playing 6 individual games that can be won or lost, we are trying to run a 6-0 gaunlet. And any stumble could be our last.
